TV-Series
Description
Mei Sunohara is the younger sister of Youhei Sunohara, a recurring character who brings a grounding presence to the often-chaotic world of her older brother. She is a thirteen-year-old middle school student when she is introduced, standing 152 centimeters tall with a slight build that belies her inner strength. Physically, she is recognizable by her black hair, typically tied into pigtails with thin yellow ribbons, and her matching amber eyes, which often reflect a knowing and mature perspective on the events around her.

In stark contrast to her older brother Youhei, who is known for being immature, lazy, and a frequent source of comic relief, Mei is remarkably diligent, confident, and courageous for her age. When protagonist Tomoya Okazaki first learns of her existence, he imagines her as a female version of his troublesome friend, and he is genuinely shocked to discover instead a polite, hardworking, and sensible young girl. Her personality is defined by a deep, abiding love for her brother, which manifests as a constant, worried vigilance over his life. She is not, however, a passive character; she possesses a playful and sometimes mischievous side, using her charm strategically to tease those around her, particularly Tomoya, who she affectionately refers to as onii-chan. This mix of sincerity and subtle cunning makes her far more complex than a standard devoted little sister.

Mei’s primary motivation stems from her past and her desire to see her brother return to the person she once knew. She holds onto a powerful childhood memory where Youhei would always come to her rescue when she was bullied by other children because of his own troublesome reputation. She is deeply saddened to see that he has seemingly changed, having lost his direction, been kicked out of the school soccer club, and become apathetic. Her central goal is to shake him out of his lethargy and restore his sense of purpose, specifically by trying to get him reinstated into the soccer club, believing his happiness depends on it. Her actions are a determined effort to provoke a reaction from him, to force him to care about something, and to prove that the protective older brother she idolized still exists within him.

Within the story, Mei serves as a catalyst for one of the most significant developments for her brother, as the narrative focuses on the Sunohara siblings' relationship. Her arrival in the city sets in motion a series of events where Tomoya and Nagisa attempt to help Youhei pretend he is a successful student by arranging a fake girlfriend for him. When this scheme fails to address the core issue, Mei escalates her efforts, even going so far as to pretend that Tomoya is her older boyfriend to make Youhei jealous and protective. Her role is to force an emotional confrontation, culminating in a physical altercation between Tomoya and Youhei, which ultimately leads to a cathartic reconciliation and mends the rift between the siblings. Beyond her own arc, she also plays a smaller but notable role in encouraging Tomoya and Nagisa's romance, acting as a self-appointed cupid to push their relationship forward by setting up their first real date.

Her most critical relationship is, of course, with her brother Youhei. Their dynamic is one of deep affection complicated by pride, immaturity, and misunderstanding. While Mei outwardly nags him and criticizes his lifestyle, she does so out of profound care, a fact that Youhei, despite his best efforts to seem indifferent, reciprocates in his own clumsy way. She also forms a strong bond with Tomoya Okazaki, seeing him not only as her brother's best friend but also as a reliable older figure she can trust and tease. Similarly, she becomes close to Nagisa Furukawa, staying at the Furukawa bakery and learning to appreciate Nagisa’s kind and gentle nature. Through these interactions, Mei becomes a kind of surrogate little sister to the main couple, contributing to the overarching theme of found family.

Throughout her arc, Mei undergoes a subtle but important development. She arrives with a clear but somewhat naive plan to fix her brother, believing that simply rejoining the soccer club will solve his problems. Through the struggles of trying to negotiate with the abusive soccer club members, who bully her and make her do humiliating tasks, she learns the limits of her own power. Her forced independence and perseverance ultimately succeed, but not in the way she intended. Her brother’s violent intervention to save her proves his love more than any words could, allowing Mei to finally feel secure in their relationship. She matures from a girl who feels she must take care of her wayward older brother to one who can accept his protection and love in return, leaving the city with their bond restored.

In terms of notable abilities, Mei possesses a surprising amount of physical stamina for someone her age, a trait humorously demonstrated when she is able to knock the helmet off an adult man. Her true strength, however, lies in her mental fortitude and social ingenuity. She is highly skilled in household chores, immediately taking over the cleaning of her brother's filthy dormitory room upon her arrival. She also has a cunning and strategic mind; for instance, she once single-handedly saved the Furukawa bakery from a sales slump by attracting male customers with her cute appearance and clever comments. Her most potent weapon is her emotional persistence, as she endures bullying and rejection from the soccer club without shedding a tear, demonstrating a resolve far beyond her years.
