Description
Hisamitsu Noto is a male student in class 2-C at Ohashi High School, placing him in the same homeroom as the protagonist, Ryuuji Takasu. He has been a classmate and friend of Ryuuji since their first year, making him one of the few people who initially understood that Ryuuji's intimidating appearance belies his kind nature. Noto is typically seen alongside his other close friend, Kouji Haruta, forming a small trio with Ryuuji.

Physically, Noto is a teenager of average height for a second-year student, standing at approximately 163 centimeters tall. He has brown, somewhat spiky hair and brown eyes, and he is almost always depicted wearing a pair of glasses due to his poor eyesight. His standard attire is the school uniform, which he wears along with a sweater. At school, his glasses frames can vary in color, but he is most commonly associated with his black-rimmed pair.

On the surface, Noto presents a calm and composed demeanor, which can sometimes be mistakenly interpreted as being cold or aloof. In reality, he is quite friendly and gets along well with the rest of his classmates. When he becomes excited or energetic, his lively and cheerful side emerges, revealing a more sociable and open personality than his default stoic expression might suggest ]. Despite his tendency to say what he thinks, he is fundamentally a caring individual who is perceptive of the relationships and feelings of the people around him. This can, however, tip over into being somewhat meddlesome or nosy on occasion.

His motivations are largely rooted in his friendships and his quiet observations of his peers. He is a loyal friend to Ryuuji, Haruta, and Yusaku Kitamura, and he shows a genuine, if sometimes clumsy, concern for their well-being. This is particularly evident in a short story set after the main plot, where he awkwardly tries to check on Ryuuji's emotional state after a difficult period. His primary character motivation becomes his unspoken and initially unrealized romantic feelings for his classmate, Maya Kihara.

Noto's role in the story is that of a supporting character, serving as part of the main cast of friends who populate class 2-C and interact with the core group. He helps to create the normal high school atmosphere that contrasts with the more dramatic events surrounding characters like Taiga Aisaka. He is often present in group activities, such as basketball games in gym class, the school cultural festival, a beach trip, a ski trip, and Christmas shopping excursions. During the cultural festival, when the class decides to hold a professional wrestling show, Noto participates by playing the role of an evil villain who has been brainwashed by Taiga's "Palmtop Tiger" persona.

The most significant relationship in Noto's character arc is with Maya Kihara. Their dynamic begins with frequent arguments, most of which stem from Maya's obvious crush on their classmate, Yusaku Kitamura. Noto often finds himself on the other side of these disagreements, especially as the friend group starts to unofficially support a potential relationship between Taiga and Kitamura, which conflicts with Maya's wishes. This contentious relationship takes a turn during the winter ski trip, following a heated argument between them. It is after this conflict that he begins to develop romantic feelings for her, a realization that dawns on him slowly ]. He shows his affection in subtle ways, such as when he helps repair her iPod nano. Noto's personal journey culminates in his feelings for Maya, which become a central focus of his character development, especially in the light novel's spin-off story, "The Invisible Man Who Wants to Eat Ramen," where he is the protagonist.

Academically, Noto's abilities are somewhat specialized. While his grades in other subjects are average, his performance in the Japanese language is outstanding. This strength aligns with his personal aspirations for the future, as he hopes to pursue a career as a writer. In line with this creative inclination, his favorite genre of music is progressive rock, and he also harbors a dream of working as a reporter for a music magazine. Beyond his scholastic talents, his main notable ability is his perceptiveness when it comes to the social dynamics and interpersonal relationships within his group of friends, even if he is not always sure how to act on what he observes.
