Description
Haruka Kuran is a pureblood vampire, born over three thousand years ago, making him one of the oldest and most powerful members of his kind. He is the younger brother of Rido Kuran and the older brother of Juri Kuran, whom he later marries. Together, Haruka and Juri become the parents of two children, Kaname and Yuki Kuran.

In terms of appearance, Haruka possesses the characteristic, almost unnatural beauty common to purebloods. He is a tall man with dark brown hair and dark eyes, and he appears to be in his late twenties. His features are similar to those of his older brother, Rido, and his son, Kaname.

His personality is described as being mild-tempered, quiet, and kind, traits which he shares with his daughter Yuki. He is portrayed as a pacifist who believes in the future, preferring to live a quiet life while watching over his family. This gentle nature is complemented by his patient and devoted love for Juri, whom he pursued dogmatically until she returned his affections, and with whom he has been together for nearly three thousand years.

Haruka’s primary motivation throughout the story is the protection of his family, especially his daughter Yuki. Fearing that his brother Rido would attempt to take Yuki, Haruka decides to hide her existence from the world until she is strong enough to protect herself. He is also aware of the Vampire Council’s attempts to use pureblood vampires for the value of their existence and the power of their blood, adding a political dimension to his desire for a safe and peaceful life for his children.

His role in the story is largely defined by the tragic events of the past. The most significant event is his death at the hands of his own brother, Rido. When Rido returns to the Kuran mansion after learning of Yuki’s existence, Haruka fights to defend his family. During the battle, he is mortally wounded by a hunter’s sword. When Kaname arrives and attempts to act as a shield, Haruka refuses, stating that being protected by his son would shatter his pride as a father. He affirms his love for Kaname, calling him his beloved son, before shattering into pieces and dying. His sacrifice is a cornerstone of the plot, as Juri subsequently uses her remaining life to seal Yuki’s vampire memories and turn her into a human to keep her safe.

Key relationships define his character. His relationship with Juri began when she was born, with Haruka falling in love with his younger sister and eventually winning her heart. They share a deep, loving bond that has lasted for millennia. His relationship with his son Kaname is complex. The child known as Kaname Kuran is not Haruka’s biological son, but rather the original vampire ancestor who was reawakened using Haruka’s first child as a sacrifice. Haruka is fully aware of this truth but nevertheless chooses to raise the ancestor as his own son without any spite or hatred. Although Kaname, out of guilt, often addresses Haruka by name rather than as father, Haruka unconditionally loves him and affirms this love even in his final moments. His relationship with his daughter Yuki is one of pure protectiveness. He loves her deeply and ultimately gives his life in an attempt to prevent Rido from taking her.

Haruka does not undergo a significant character development during the main storyline as he perishes before the series begins. His development is instead revealed through flashbacks, exposing his long history, his unwavering commitment to his pacifist beliefs, and the painful knowledge he carries regarding the truth of his son’s identity. His legacy and the impact of his death continue to drive the motivations of both Kaname and Yuki throughout the series.

As a pureblood vampire, Haruka possesses immense supernatural abilities, including immortality and rapid healing from most wounds. However, his specialization is a unique power allowing him to metamorphose and permeate the flesh and bodies of others. This ability is showcased during his final battle with Rido, where he uses it to dismember and transform other vampires into a single beast, which he then commands to attack its own master.
