Description
Elle Ragu holds the title of the 59th Sevaar of Kurda, a warrior kingdom with a history stretching back over two thousand years. Achieved when she was only fourteen years old, this rank is a testament to her extraordinary combat prowess, making her the youngest female ever to be awarded the title of Sevaar, which is roughly equivalent to a high warrior. Her fighting epithet, "Shadow Skill," is also the name of her signature martial arts style. Throughout the events of the story, which begin three years after she earns this rank, she must navigate the responsibilities and challenges that come with being one of Kurda's most elite fighters.
The foundation of Elle's character is deeply rooted in a tragic family history that shapes many of her motivations. Both of her parents died from a rampaging disease when she was young, and she herself contracted the same illness. Her older brother, Diaz Ragu, a skilled warrior and blacksmith, undertook numerous dangerous missions to afford the medicine that saved her life. While Elle was saved, Diaz's body was severely weakened by his efforts, forcing him to abandon his dream of becoming a Sevaar and devote himself to crafting his signature Black Wing boomerangs. Elle carries a profound and persistent guilt over this, firmly believing that her brother was more deserving of the title she now holds. This personal history is a key driver for her, contrasting her public reputation with a private emotional burden.
In her daily life, Elle is known for a boisterous and often self-destructive personality. She has a reputation as both a heavy drinker and an inveterate brawler, frequently acting on impulse without any apparent regard for the consequences. A recurring theme in her story is her deep and seemingly endless financial debt; any money she earns or receives is almost immediately spent on paying for damages caused during her fights or on the accumulated debts from previous incidents. Despite her arrogance and stubbornness, which often lead her and her companions into trouble, she is fiercely protective and dependable when a serious threat emerges. While she may appear lazy or simple-minded in general matters, this is contrasted by her status as a genius in combat.
Elle's central role in the story is as a mentor and guardian to her adopted younger brother, Gau Ban. She took Gau in after his village was destroyed by bandits, deciding to raise him and train him in the Shadow Skill style. Their relationship is complex, as both later admitted to somewhat selfish reasons for the arrangement—Gau wanted to become strong, while Elle wanted to see how powerful a person she could raise. Nevertheless, she is intensely loyal to him, and much of her journey involves protecting him and honing his skills to follow in her footsteps. Her relationships with others are equally significant, including a rivalry with Fia Arcana which eventually transforms into a close alliance after Elle saves her life. She is also frequently challenged by other warriors who see her, as the youngest and least experienced Sevaar, as a prime target to defeat and claim her title, a situation she rarely hesitates to engage with.
Elle's character develops through her interactions and the legacy she carries. Her primary motivation is a blend of guilt toward her brother Diaz and a fierce desire to fulfill her duties as a Sevaar, protecting the stability of Kurda and her adopted family. Her development is not about overcoming a lack of skill, but about learning to balance her impulsive nature with the responsibilities of her rank. She often mediates conflicts between Kurda and neighboring nations, balancing her duties as a warrior with the personal challenges of her past, such as the guilt she feels over the death of the swordsman Zel Zakulet during a duel. Her confidence in combat is absolute, famously declaring her kicks "invincible," yet this very ego can present a tactical vulnerability that she must manage.
The foundation of Elle's notable abilities is her mastery of the Kuruda-style martial art known as Kousappou, or Annihilation Techniques. This style is divided into two general forms. The first is Hyougi, or Open Skills, which emphasize punches and throws. The second is Eigi, or Shadow Skills, which focus almost entirely on kicks and sophisticated footwork. This division has a historical origin rooted in the days of slavery, where female gladiators, who often had their hands bound, were forced to develop powerful leg techniques to survive, making the Shadow Skill style both fearsome and highly respected. Elle is a master of this demanding style, and her specific techniques include powerful energy-based attacks such as Sword, a ki-enveloped flaming kick; Dagger, a devastating vertical front kick; Chainsaw, a rapid high-speed rotation of the feet; and Blade, an aura-enhanced roundhouse kick. Her physical capabilities, honed through this training, are superhuman, granting her immense strength capable of city-level destruction, massively hypersonic speed, and extreme endurance. She can also create solid afterimages and possesses regenerative abilities through a technique known as Zenryoku Kaiten.
