TV-Series
Description
Diane Thurston is the older sister of Renton Thurston and the daughter of the renowned scientist Adroc Thurston. She has brownish-red hair and blue eyes, and is often seen wearing a blue dress with white pants. Following the death of her mother during Renton's birth, Diane assumed a surrogate maternal role in her younger brother's life, a responsibility that deepened after their father disappeared and was later presumed dead. She is characterized as an intelligent, mature, and kind individual, known for her close, loving bond with Renton. She taught him to believe in himself and to strive for what is important to him, shaping his optimistic and determined outlook.
Diane shares her father's profound interest in the scientific research of the Scub Coral, the enigmatic coral-like life form that covers much of the planet. This passion ultimately becomes an obsession, driving her to follow in Adroc's footsteps, a path that leads to her own disappearance. Before leaving home, she ensured Renton would be cared for by their grandfather, Axel, and left her brother with the instruction to always believe in her and that they would meet again. Much of the early narration in the series is presented as if Renton is writing letters to his absent sister, highlighting her lasting influence on him.
Before her disappearance, Diane had a romantic relationship with Holland Novak, whom she first met when they were children. Their relationship began after Adroc vanished, a time when Diane was grieving and seeking connection, but it eventually soured as she became increasingly fixated on her father's research. According to Holland, Diane ended the relationship when he argued that attempting to communicate with the Scub Coral was futile; she cut off all communication with him shortly thereafter. Her absence and unresolved fate leave Holland bitter and obsessed, and his troubled memories of her contribute to his initial harsh treatment of Renton. Talho Yūki, Holland's later partner, is also deeply affected by Diane's memory, reacting with anxiety and jealousy at the mention of her.
Throughout the majority of the story, Diane's face is deliberately obscured in flashbacks and photographs, creating an air of mystery around her. Her fate is eventually revealed when Renton discovers that she has somehow ended up inside the Command Center of the Scub Coral. There, in an artificial library created by the Scub Coral, she is part of a small group of people who have voluntarily chosen to remain, reading and researching to understand the truth of the Scub Coral and its history. She explains the consequences of the Limit of Questions to Renton and his companions, providing crucial information about the world's central conflict.
As a scientist, Diane's primary ability lies in her intellect and her dedication to research, particularly in the fields related to the Scub Coral. She does not possess any notable combat or piloting abilities. Her most significant contribution is the emotional and ideological foundation she provides for Renton, serving as a guiding voice that pushes him to believe in the impossible. Her final fate remains ambiguous, as the Command Center is destroyed after Renton leaves, but it is suggested that she and her father may have survived within the Scub Coral, continuing their research.
