TV-Series
Description
Charles Beam is a freelance Light Finding Operation pilot and mercenary who operates with his wife and partner, Ray Beams. He first appears as a seemingly carefree and easygoing individual, a former soldier who now spends his days taking on transport jobs, fighting off raiders, and enjoying life on the road with his wife aboard their ship, the Swan. Before becoming a freelance mercenary, Charles was a member of the Special Operations Forces, where he served as a commander and was a colleague of Holland, Talho, Dewey, and Adrock Thurston. This shared history places him as a contemporary of the key founding members of Gekkostate, with his relationship to Holland in particular being that of a rival and a man who took a different path after their service ended.

Charles possesses a humorous and genial personality, often presenting a warm and welcoming exterior. He has a passion for music and dance and enjoys the simple pleasures of a free life. However, this friendly demeanor masks a hardened interior; underneath his approachable surface, he remains a highly capable and efficient killer from his days leading an elite force. This duality is a defining characteristic, as he balances a love for modern, high-tech equipment, such as a collection of advanced ref boards, with a personal preference in combat for an old bolt-action rifle that is nevertheless modified to be capable of piercing the armor of LFOs. His primary motivation is the life he has built with Ray, and he is content in their arrangement until they are hired by the military to retrieve Eureka and the Nirvash from Gekkostate. This mission brings him into direct conflict with his past and with the group the protagonist, Renton Thurston, has come to call family.

Charles's most significant role in the story is that of a surrogate father figure to Renton. After Renton runs away from Gekkostate feeling alienated and lost, he is taken in by Charles and Ray. For a brief but impactful period, they provide him with the warmth, stability, and parental affection he has lacked since his own father's disappearance. Charles treats Renton with an honesty and respect that contrasts sharply with Holland's often harsh and secretive treatment. He gives Renton a place to call home, teaches him practical skills, and offers him straightforward advice about the realities of the world. However, this relationship is built on a fault line, as the Beams' contract to capture Eureka necessitates the destruction of Gekkostate, putting Charles in an impossible position where his paternal feelings for the boy conflict with his contractual obligations and his own past. When Renton learns the truth, Charles gives him a genuine choice to leave, return to Gekkostate, or stay, promising to respect his decision, an act that demonstrates the depth of his complicated care for the boy.

His most important relationship is with Ray, his wife and constant partner. Their bond is symbiotic; they work together seamlessly in battle and support each other emotionally in all things, including their shared but unfulfilled desire for a child. His relationship with Renton transforms them into an impromptu family, with Renton even calling him "papa." Charles's past connection to Holland is equally crucial to his arc, as their history as comrades and rivals creates a tragic inevitability to their final confrontation. Their conflict is not born of simple animosity but from the divergent paths they chose and the duties they now feel bound to.

Throughout his brief appearance, Charles undergoes a tragic development. Initially a detached freelancer, he becomes a devoted and caring father figure. This newfound paternal role clashes directly with his professional identity as a mercenary when his mission forces him to hunt his surrogate son's family. His inability to fully resolve this conflict leads to his death. During an infiltration of the Gekko, he is shot and killed by Holland in a hangar gunfight. Even in his final moments, his combat skills are evident as he mortally wounds Holland with his rifle. Charles's body contained a timed bomb that he and Ray had swallowed before the mission as a contingency, which Ray later detonated to escape capture, leaving no remains.

In terms of abilities, Charles is a highly skilled pilot, operating a blue Spearhead LFO. His combat style is pragmatic and deadly, a reflection of his special forces training. He is equally proficient in piloting his LFO as he is in direct infantry combat, and he relies on his unique, powerful rifle as his signature weapon. His tactical knowledge and experience as a former commander make him a formidable and calculating opponent, capable of infiltrating a heavily defended ship like the Gekko.
