Description
Doctor is a prominent antagonist from the anime Black Cat, known primarily as a high-ranking member of the terrorist organization called the Apostles of the Star. His real name is Kousuke or Kazuo Kanzaki, and he originates from the Jipang archipelago, the series' counterpart to Japan. He is a scientist of considerable intellect, and his role within the group is largely defined by his expertise in bio-technology and his profound, disturbing interest in the human body's potential for evolution.

In terms of appearance, Doctor is unassuming, looking like a normal man with brown hair and a pair of glasses, which he requires due to poor vision. His standard attire is a lab coat, a visual cue that reinforces his identity as a man of science above all else. His demeanor is typically calm, collected, and polite; he speaks in a formal and courteous manner, even when addressing his enemies. This surface-level affability, however, masks a deeply malevolent and psychotic nature. Doctor holds no regard for human life, viewing other people as nothing more than convenient guinea pigs for his experiments. He is a remorseless sadist who derives genuine enjoyment from manipulating others, playing cruel mind games, and inflicting suffering. When asked about his horrific actions, his casual response is that he does them because they are fun.

Doctor's primary motivation is the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, driven by a sheer psychosis rather than a desire for personal power. While he shares his leader Creed Diskenth's goal of creating superhumans and achieving immortality, his interest is in the scientific breakthrough itself. He wants to understand how everything works and to push humanity to its next stage of evolution, with any moral considerations being a useless hindrance to this goal. He is also notably greedy and cautious, often demanding large sums of money for his services and preferring to operate from the shadows, avoiding direct combat whenever possible. This combination of intellectual arrogance and physical cowardice makes him one of the most purely evil members of the Apostles.

Within the story, Doctor serves as Creed's right-hand man and closest confidant, one of the first recruits to the cause and the only one who knows the full scope of Creed's ambitions without being disturbed by them. His role is that of the group's technical mastermind, responsible for Creed's most secret projects. These projects primarily involve the development and application of powerful nanomachines. He creates various strains for different purposes, including healing nanomachines, Lucifer nanomachines that transform people into brainwashed, regenerative werewolves, and Berserker nanomachines that turn victims into mindless killing machines. One of his key objectives is to develop the God Bless nanomachines intended to grant Creed immortality.

Doctor has significant and defining relationships with several main characters. His relationship with Creed is one of mutual utility; Creed provides the resources and vision, while Doctor provides the scientific means. He is also fixated on the character Eve, a young girl who is a bio-weapon composed of nanomachines. Doctor is intensely curious about her unique biology and repeatedly seeks to capture and dissect her to unlock its secrets. He also harbors a notable animosity towards Train Heartnet, the series' protagonist, viewing him as a subject for his twisted psychological experiments.

In the manga, Doctor possesses a terrifying Tao ability called the Warp World. This power allows him to create an alternate dimension where his imagination becomes reality. Within this space, he can manipulate the environment at will, access and manifest the memories of those trapped inside, and create seemingly invincible doppelgangers of a person's loved ones to torment them. Outside of the Warp World, he has no significant combat abilities and is physically weak, easily defeated by a single strong punch. His power is entirely dependent on luring his enemies into his domain.

The anime adaptation makes several notable changes to his character. While still malevolent, his sadistic and psychotic thirst for knowledge is replaced with more traditional villainous traits like overconfidence and a simple desire to rule. His role as a scientist is lessened, as the more complex nanomachine projects that define his manga counterpart are not featured. Consequently, his relationship with Creed is also less significant. Most notably, his signature Tao ability, the Warp World, does not exist in the anime continuity. He is instead revealed to be a key figure in the Eden Project, a scheme to use a sentient aircraft to unify the world's consciousness, and is associated with another villainous group called the Zero Numbers. He approaches his goals with a cunning and ruthless intelligence, but his methods are generally more direct and less psychologically intricate than his manga counterpart.
