Description
Doctor, whose real name is Kosuke Kanzaki, is a major antagonist affiliated with the Apostles of the Star. He is a 26-year-old scientist originating from the Jipang archipelago, the fictional counterpart of Japan within the story's world. Physically, Doctor has the appearance of an ordinary man with brown hair and glasses, which he requires due to poor vision; he is almost always depicted wearing a white lab coat.
On the surface, Doctor presents himself as a calm, collected, and polite individual who speaks formally and courteously. He can be frank with both allies and enemies about what awaits them. However, this demeanor masks a deeply disturbed and malevolent personality. He embodies the archetype of the mad scientist, conducting gruesome experiments without the slightest regard for morality or human life, and is capable of performing vivisection on a child without hesitation. His devotion to science and his desire to understand how everything works are driven by sheer psychosis. He regards human beings merely as guinea pigs and takes genuine pleasure in his cruel work, once stating that he performs horrific acts "because it's fun". Doctor is also highly intelligent, calculating, and prefers to operate from the shadows, observing situations before making his move.
Doctor's primary motivations are rooted in a fanatical devotion to scientific progress. He shares the Apostles' leader, Creed Diskenth's, desire to create superhumans and achieve immortality, though his interest in immortality is less for personal gain and more for the sake of achieving it as a monumental scientific breakthrough. To this end, he is willing to manipulate, torment, and sacrifice anyone. He considers human emotions and feelings to be a useless hindrance to understanding the human psyche and enjoys playing cruel mind games, such as forcing people to fight doppelgangers of their loved ones.
Within the story, Doctor serves as Creed's right-hand man and the organization's chief scientific officer, though his role is less significant in the anime adaptation. He is one of the first members recruited by Creed and is entrusted with his most secret projects. Doctor does not typically participate in direct combat, as he is described as cowardly and prefers to let his creations do the fighting. His role often involves healing key members, such as when he reattached Train Heartnet's severed hand on Creed's orders and later placed Creed in an artificial coma to heal his severe wounds. He is also responsible for capturing individuals, like the thief Rinslet Walker, and using them as pawns or test subjects.
Key relationships for Doctor include his loyalty to Creed Diskenth, whose grand vision for global revolution he supports without being disturbed by its true nature. Among the Apostles, he is arguably the most malevolent, even more so than Creed himself. He holds a particular interest in the bio-android Eve, as her unique nanomachine-based body represents a scientific marvel he is desperate to capture and dissect to understand its functions. He also has a connection to the world's greatest nanotechnologist, Dr. Tearju Lunatique; in the anime, he is revealed to have once been one of her scientists before secretly continuing a project called Eden.
In terms of development, Doctor remains a consistent and unrepentant villain throughout the narrative. He is confronted and defeated by Train and Eve after using his powers to trap them. In the manga, following Creed's defeat, Doctor is briefly seen sitting on the streets, suggesting his downfall. The anime adaptation expands his role by revealing he is also a member of the Zero Numbers and a key figure behind the Eden Project, a scheme involving a sentient, nanomachine-powered aircraft.
Doctor's most notable ability stems from his power of Tao, which in the manga allows him to create the Warp World. Within this alternate reality, everything he imagines can become reality. He can pull memories from the minds of those trapped inside and give those memories physical form, creating immortal doppelgangers of a person's friends or enemies to torment them. Apart from this reality-warping power, he possesses no significant physical enhancements and is relatively weak in a direct physical confrontation, as demonstrated when he is defeated by a single punch. In the anime, this power does not exist, and his villainy is instead characterized by overconfidence and the use of nanomachine-powered monsters. Beyond his Tao ability, Doctor is a brilliant scientist specializing in nanotechnology. He creates various formulas, including Lucifer nanomachines which turn people into immortal, brainwashed werewolves, and Berserker nanomachines which enhance a subject's combat abilities while robbing them of reason. He also possesses healing abilities and uses his scientific knowledge to analyze and experiment on subjects.
