Description
In the film Pom Poko, Kiyo, also known as Okiyo or Kiyo of the Breaking Up Temple, is a central character who serves as the deuteragonist and the wife of the young tanuki leader Shoukichi. She is a small, round tanuki distinguished by her orange vest with a yellow stripe at the bottom. Like other female tanuki in the story, her face is slightly rounder than the males, and she has more prominent eyelashes, which helps to identify her among the community.

Kiyo is defined by her strong, practical, and dedicated personality, particularly concerning her relationship with Shoukichi and the survival of their kind. Despite the grave situation facing the tanuki of the Tama Hills, she shows a resilience to personal tragedy; her own father was shot and killed by a hunter, whose hide was then sold, yet she does not dwell on this sorrow. Her primary motivation is directly tied to the central conflict of the film: to fight against the encroaching human suburban development and drive the humans from their ancestral home. To this end, she works closely alongside her husband.

Her role in the story is intrinsically linked to Shoukichi, and together they represent the younger generation of tanuki grappling with an unprecedented crisis. Kiyo is part of the core group resisting the destruction of their forest habitat. A key aspect of her personal story involves a difficult decision regarding reproduction. Recognizing that overpopulation would worsen their struggle for diminishing food and land, she and Shoukichi attempt to not have children. However, the narrative notes that she cannot keep her hands off of Shoukichi, and she eventually gives birth to four cubs, demonstrating that personal bonds and the drive for family persist even in times of immense pressure.

Throughout the film, Kiyo undergoes a significant development, mirroring the harsh choices forced upon the tanuki. As the resistance ultimately fails and their habitat is almost entirely lost, she adapts to the new reality. In the film’s resolution, Kiyo chooses to follow the path of the foxes. She abandons her tanuki form to live discreetly among humans, securing a job at a snack bar to survive in the urbanized world that was built over her home. In terms of notable abilities, as a tanuki, Kiyo possesses the inherent and traditional skill of transformation, or illusion science, allowing her to shapeshift into various forms, a power used in the tanukis' elaborate schemes to haunt and disrupt the construction of the new town.
