Description
Chikuma Koshiro is a young ninja of the Iga Tsubagakure clan, selected as one of the ten representatives to battle the rival Kouga clan. Despite his official rank of genin, a foot soldier, his natural talent is recognized by the clan's leadership, securing his place among the elite warriors. He serves as the devoted apprentice to the cruel and powerful Tenzen Yakushiji, and he shares a childhood bond with Oboro, the gentle-hearted heiress of the Iga clan.
Physically, Koshiro is a young man with long, messy black hair and notably bushy eyebrows, with two small, unexplained scars on his left cheek. His typical attire consists of a black, sleeveless kosode over a netted shirt, paired with black hakama. Following a pivotal event where he is blinded by Gennosuke Kouga, he adopts a new look, wearing a black mask that covers the upper half of his face and features a large, untranslated red kanji character. He also develops slight facial hair during this period.
His personality is marked by a deep internal conflict, primarily between his unwavering loyalty to his master, Tenzen, and his protective, caring feelings for Oboro. This divergence is most apparent when comparing his portrayals across different versions of the story. In the original manga, he mirrors Tenzen's ruthlessness and arrogance in combat. However, the anime adaptation presents him as more reluctant, possessing a sense of chivalry that makes him hesitant to attack a disadvantaged opponent, a trait that Tenzen harshly lectures him about, stating such ideals have no place in a ninja war. Despite his cold and reserved exterior, he is a gentle person at heart, demonstrated by a hidden talent for woodcarving, creating small figures like frogs, a skill he retains even after losing his sight. He is also driven by a powerful, unspoken romantic love for Oboro, which manifests as a deep-seated jealousy toward her fiancé, Gennosuke of the Kouga clan.
His primary motivation throughout the story is to protect Oboro and serve his clan, though these goals often place him in untenable positions. As Tenzen’s apprentice, he feels obligated to follow orders without question, leading him to participate in brutal attacks on the Kouga and attempt to kill Gennosuke. However, his loyalty is severely tested when Tenzen attempts to assault Oboro, an event that leaves Koshiro internally shattered and deeply conflicted about where his true allegiance lies.
His role in the story is that of a powerful and tragic enforcer for the Iga. He is instrumental in many of the clan's early offensives against the Kouga, using his deadly abilities to cut down enemies without hesitation. As the war progresses, his path becomes one of physical and emotional deterioration. In a crucial confrontation, Oboro inadvertently causes him to be blinded by Gennosuke's Doujutsu, a technique that compels opponents with lethal intent to turn their attacks on themselves. This event robs him of his sight and, consequently, much of his confidence and capability in battle, leading to a period of depression and vulnerability. It is during this time that he becomes more reliant on and the focus of attention from his fellow Iga ninja, Akeginu, who harbors deep, unrequited romantic feelings for him.
His key relationships define his arc. His bond with Tenzen is that of a submissive student to a sadistic master, a dynamic he struggles to break free from. His connection to Oboro is the heart of his character; she is the one person he shows true gentleness and devotion, placing himself as her silent guardian. He also has a close but unreciprocating relationship with Akeginu, who cares for him after his blinding, though he remains oblivious to the full extent of her feelings.
Koshiro’s development traces his fall from a promising, lethal warrior to a blind, emotionally battered man. He adapts to his blindness by enhancing his other senses, though his ability is notably inferior to that of the blind Kouga warrior Hyoma Muroga, which ultimately proves a critical weakness. In a final act of resolve, he faces Hyoma, and because neither can see, Hyoma’s deadly eye technique is useless. Koshiro manages to kill the veteran ninja by destroying his target's ear, which had served as a means of spatial awareness. Despite this victory, his blindness is exploited in his final moments, leading to his death. He is deceived by Saemon Kisaragi’s voice-copying ability and seduced by Kagerō, who takes the form of Akeginu and kills him with a poisoned kiss.
Koshiro’s most notable abilities center on his mastery of the Kamaitachi technique. By controlling his breath, he can create miniature, high-powered vacuums that suck in any nearby target and shreds them into pieces, a power considered potentially strong enough to counter Gennosuke's own lethal Doujutsu. In close-quarters combat, he wields a pair of kama, or hand scythes, with exceptional skill and near-perfect accuracy, capable of using them as thrown weapons that return like boomerangs. His talent and destructive power mark him as one of the most dangerous fighters of his generation, making his tragic fall from grace all the more poignant.
