Description
Okoi is a female ninja of the Koga Manjidani clan in the anime Basilisk. She is one of the ten warriors selected by clan leader Danjo Koga to fight in the conflict against the rival Iga Tsubagakure clan, and she is the younger sister of Saemon Kisaragi, another of the ten chosen fighters.
In appearance, Okoi is a young adult woman with short black hair and brown eyes. She is described as tomboyish and energetic, and she embodies the popular image of the kunoichi, the female ninja, in contrast to fellow Koga women Akeginu and Kagerou, who represent a more historically traditional version of the role. Despite her straightforward and lively manner, she is a capable fighter and is willing to use her physical appeal to lull male opponents into a false sense of security when the situation calls for it.
Within the clan, Okoi's closest relationship is with her elder brother Saemon Kisaragi. Saemon is a master of disguise and infiltration who ordinarily conducts himself with professional detachment, but he shows genuine emotion only toward his sister. The anime also portrays a warm uncle and niece bond between Okoi and Kasumi Gyoubu, a large and powerful Koga warrior; the two frequently go hunting wild boar together in the forests surrounding Manjidani.
Okoi's role in the story is that of a supporting combatant among the Koga ten, and her involvement in the war ends early when she is captured and killed by the Iga. Her death has a significant effect on her brother: after losing her, Saemon throws himself wholeheartedly into the war, treating victory for the clan and revenge for his sister as one and the same goal. Okoi's fate thus becomes one of the personal losses that deepen the cycle of vengeance between the two clans.
In terms of development, Okoi does not undergo a long arc of her own, since she perishes relatively early in the conflict. Her significance is largely defined by her relationships and by the consequences of her death, particularly for Saemon. Her abilities, as shown, are those of a skilled and resourceful kunoichi: she is a solid fighter in her own right, and she combines combat skill with the ability to deceive and distract enemies using her charm and appearance.
