Description
Fio Piccolo is a talented seventeen-year-old mechanic who serves as the deuteragonist from the film Porco Rosso. She is the granddaughter of Mr. Piccolo, an old friend and the favorite mechanic of the titular character, Porco Rosso. Prior to the events of the story, Fio had been living in America but moved to Italy to help her grandfather with his seaplane repair business, the Piccolo S.P.A., which was struggling during the Great Depression.

Fio has a cheerful, carefree, and confident personality, traits she inherits from her grandfather. She is remarkably poised and self-assured for her age, often confronting challenges and individuals with a boldness that surprises others. This is evident when she directly confronts a group of air pirates who are threatening Porco and successfully wins them over with her conviction and charm. Her confidence and youthful beauty also easily capture the attention of the ambitious American ace pilot, Donald Curtis.

Her primary motivation in the story is to aid Porco Rosso. After Porco’s plane is shot down and severely damaged in an aerial battle with Curtis, he brings the wreckage to her grandfather's factory for repairs. Fio persuades a skeptical Porco to let her help overhaul his Savoia S.21, showing great dedication and skill on the project. She takes on the role of his personal mechanic and designer, and she insists on accompanying him on his flight back to the Adriatic Sea, under the guise of being a hostage to protect her family from the fascist secret police.

Throughout the story, Fio plays a crucial role in Porco’s personal development. Initially, Porco is doubtful of her abilities due to her young age and gender, but he eventually recognizes her as a competent engineer and a genius after witnessing her hard work and passion. Her unwavering conviction and positive spirit slowly have a profound effect on the cynical Porco, reminding him of the good in humanity. A notable example of her spirited nature is when she impulsively makes a deal with Donald Curtis. To secure Porco's safety and settle a debt, she declares that if Porco wins their rematch, Curtis must pay his debts to the Piccolo company, but if Curtis wins, he could marry her. The fight ultimately ends in a stalemate, and everyone parts ways amicably.

Beyond her engineering skills, Fio develops several key relationships. She becomes an important companion to Porco, restoring his plane and his faith in others. She forms a close friendship with Madame Gina, the owner of the Hotel Adriano and another significant figure in Porco’s life. Her grandfather, Mr. Piccolo, is a constant source of support for her, trusting her with significant responsibility. Her notable abilities include her exceptional intelligence and talent as an aircraft designer and mechanic. She demonstrates her skill by leading an all-female team at the Piccolo factory to construct a new plane for Porco. In the end, Fio’s life comes full circle as she takes over her grandfather's business, grows it into a successful aircraft manufacturing company, and is last seen piloting a light, jet-powered seaplane she designed herself.
