Description
Fio Pikkoro is a central character in the story and is introduced as a talented seventeen-year-old aeronautical engineer. She was born and raised in the United States but moved to Milan, Italy, to work at her grandfather’s seaplane repair shop, the Piccolo S.P.A. company, following the onset of the Great Depression. She has fair skin, large brown eyes, and vibrant orange hair that is typically styled in a ponytail. Her typical attire consists of a shirt with blue and white patterns, blue pants or jeans with a belt, and pearl earrings.

Fio has a cheerful, carefree, and confident personality, traits she largely inherits from her grandfather. She is portrayed as being bold and ambitious, with a strong desire to prove herself as a capable mechanic, a field not typically associated with young women at the time. Her confidence and forceful innocence allow her to directly confront the hardened air pirates who threaten Porco, and she manages to win them over with her conviction. Despite her technical prowess and assertive nature, she also shows a gentler side in her interactions with Porco.

Fio’s primary motivation in the story is to demonstrate her skills and help a pilot she genuinely admires. She had heard incredible stories about Porco Rosso, as her father served under him in the Italian Air Force, and she wants to help him break the curse he is under. After Porco’s Savoia S.21 fighter plane is nearly destroyed in a battle with the American pilot Donald Curtis, Fio persuades Porco to let her overhaul and redesign the aircraft. Her role becomes crucial when she chooses to accompany Porco back to the Adriatic Sea as his personal mechanic, effectively becoming his sidekick.

Throughout her journey, Fio forms key relationships that affect her development and the story’s outcome. She works closely with her unnamed grandfather, the owner of the repair shop, who is grooming her to one day take over the family business. Her growing companionship with Porco Rosso is central; her youthful enthusiasm and optimism slowly have an effect on his jaded worldview. She also charms Donald Curtis, who seemingly falls for her youthful beauty and confidence. In a bold wager to support Porco, she promises to marry Curtis if he wins their rematch, a bet that fortunately ends in a stalemate.

Fio demonstrates significant development, evolving from a young woman eager to prove her technical skill to a confident individual who successfully takes over her grandfather’s company. Her courage and spirited nature not only help Porco in his aerial duel but also leave a lasting impression on the pirates and other characters she encounters. By the end of the story, she has become good friends with Gina, the owner of the Hotel Adriano, signifying her full integration into the world of the Adriatic aviators. One of her final appearances shows her piloting a light jet-powered seaplane, illustrating her lifelong passion for aviation and her growth into a skilled pilot in her own right. Among her notable abilities, she is a highly gifted aircraft designer and mechanic, possessing a level of technical skill that even the experienced Porco Rosso comes to respect.
