Description
Aoyagi Seimei is the older brother of the series' protagonist, Ritsuka Aoyagi. Born on November 14, Seimei is seventeen years old at the time of the story's main events. His name originates from the lunar day Seimei. At the outset, Seimei is introduced as having been murdered at the age of seventeen, his body found in Ritsuka's classroom and burned beyond recognition, identified only through dental records. It is later revealed that Seimei faked his death, though the identity of the actual person who died in his place remains unknown. He is the Sacrifice of the spell unit known as Beloved.

Seimei's personality is a subject of significant debate, as characters within the narrative hold drastically different interpretations of his nature. To his younger brother Ritsuka, Seimei was a kind, gentle, and loving protector who served as a crucial source of comfort and trust, especially after Ritsuka lost his memories and began suffering abuse from their mother. Their mother, Misaki, also believed Seimei would shield Ritsuka from her. However, this image sharply contrasts with the views of others. His former Fighter, Soubi Agatsuma, displays fear and spite towards Seimei, while other characters like Nagisa and members of the organization Seven describe him as cruel, merciless, and hateful. They note that Seimei acted strangely, remaining distant from everyone and refusing to eat in front of others. Kio Kaidou harbors an intense hatred for Seimei over how Soubi was treated.

As the truth unfolds, Seimei's facade of a caring brother gives way to a more disturbing reality. He is a sadistic and manipulative individual with an obsessive, borderline incestuous fixation on Ritsuka. Seimei has stated that in his world, only he and Ritsuka are human, and everyone else is an animal. He seeks for Ritsuka to give himself completely, body, soul, love, and mind. This violent and possessive nature is confirmed when he gouges out the eyes of a man named Ritsu after a heated conversation, using the blood to write a message for Ritsuka. Seimei views others as pawns or tools, a perspective that extends to his relationships with his Fighters, whom he dominates completely.

Seimei's primary role in the story is that of a major antagonist. Initially a posthumous figure whose murder Ritsuka seeks to avenge against the secret society Septimal Moon, Seimei is later revealed to be alive. He is directly responsible for numerous tragedies and manipulates events from behind the scenes. His motivations are rooted in a twisted concept of love, a desire for absolute control, and the goal of creating a world where only he and Ritsuka exist, untainted by others. His actions drive much of the plot, including his infiltration of the Seven Voices Academy, where he attacks and blinds Ritsu, and his subsequent reclamation of Soubi as his Fighter, devastating Ritsuka.

Seimei's key relationships are defined by dominance and obsession. With Ritsuka, he presents a mask of loving protection but is in truth obsessively possessive, viewing his brother as his only equal and possession. With Soubi Agatsuma, who was given to Seimei as a Fighter when Seimei was fourteen, the relationship is one of master and servant. Seimei carved his name, Beloved, onto Soubi's neck, establishing a bond characterized by cruelty, control, and an inability for Soubi to disobey. Later, Seimei acquires his true, destined Fighter, Nisei Akame, whom he also treats as a subordinate, often ignoring his pleas for assistance in battle. These relationships showcase Seimei's need to be the absolute center of another person's world.

Seimei's development throughout the series is one of revelation rather than change. The initial portrayal of a murdered, beloved brother gives way to the unveiling of his true horrifying nature as a psychopathic master manipulator. As the story progresses and Ritsuka experiences startling flashbacks, the audience, like the protagonist, is forced to reconcile the memory of a gentle sibling with the reality of a depraved individual who has orchestrated a complex web of lies and violence for his own enigmatic purposes.

Notable abilities set Seimei apart within the world of spell battles. As a Sacrifice, his role is typically to take damage for his Fighter, but Seimei possesses unique powers beyond that of a normal Sacrifice. He demonstrates the ability to fight back on his own, manipulating the atmosphere to overload the senses of opponents, creating an overwhelming pressure and a crushing feeling of negativity. This power, described by others as inhuman, allows him to nearly incapacitate enemies without a Fighter. Furthermore, Seimei has a potent power of suggestion or control over others, making people want to listen to and obey his commands, an ability that extends even to those who are not under his spell. He is also known to have carved his true name onto Soubi, a physical manifestation of their bond.
