An ambush by enemy ninjas, including Hebimaru, targeted his residence. A fire-producing bomb thrown into the house trapped Max and Van inside as flames spread. During the fire, a ceiling-mounted canoe collapsed when its ropes burned through. To save Van from being crushed, Max pushed him to safety and placed a piece of Ninja Gum into his mouth. This action awakened Van's latent ninja abilities, extinguishing the fire but leaving the structure destroyed. Max suffered critical injuries in the process and collapsed, requiring urgent hospitalization.

The severe injuries plunged Max into an indefinite coma. Master Genryusai of the WNA subsequently offered Van ninja training in exchange for guaranteeing Max's ongoing protection and medical treatment, leading to Van's enrollment at the WNA academy.

Max's family lineage carries a distinctive purple streak in the hair, shared by both Van and Van's mother; it remains unclear if this trait is natural or dyed. Max continues in a comatose state under WNA supervision.
