Description
In the 2003 anime adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist, which follows a storyline that diverges significantly from the original manga, the character Sloth is also known by her alias Juliet Douglas. She is a homunculus, an artificial human created as a failed byproduct of a forbidden human transmutation. Unlike her counterpart in the manga and Brotherhood anime, this Sloth is a tall, auburn-haired woman bearing an uncanny resemblance to Trisha Elric, the late mother of protagonists Edward and Alphonse Elric. Her creation occurred when the Elric brothers attempted to resurrect their mother, resulting in a mass of organic matter that was later shaped into a human form and sustained by Dante using Red Stones. The Ouroboros tattoo, marking her as a homunculus, is located on the upper left side of her chest.

In terms of personality, Sloth is characterized by a calm, apathetic, and often indifferent demeanor, which serves as an interpretation of her namesake sin. She is rarely seen expressing intense emotion, maintaining a composed and sometimes snide or patronizing attitude even in perilous situations. Despite the hard-working nature of her role as a secretary, she embodies a deeper meaning of sloth: a refusal to accept responsibility for her own existence and the emotional labor of dealing with her painful memories. Internally, she is tormented by the inherited memories of Trisha Elric's life, particularly her love for her sons. This causes a profound identity crisis; she hates the Elric brothers for creating her and burdening her with these feelings, yet the remnants of Trisha’s memories compel her to care for them. This internal conflict drives her primary motivation: to kill Edward and Alphonse in order to destroy the memories of being their mother and prove to herself that she is a separate, independent being, not a replacement for the deceased Trisha.

Within the story, Sloth operates under the direct command of the ancient alchemist Dante, who promises to eventually make the homunculi human. To further Dante’s plans, Sloth assumes the identity of Juliet Douglas, a soldier listed as killed in the Ishvalan civil war, and becomes the personal secretary to Führer King Bradley, who is himself the homunculus Pride. From this position of influence, she handles espionage, arranges assassinations, and manipulates military affairs. She is responsible for setting up the ambush that leads to the death of Maes Hughes and for attempting to silence Winry Rockbell and Sheska when they discover her secret. A key relationship develops between Sloth and the homunculus child Wrath. She takes on a maternal role towards him, using him as a substitute for the sons she resents, and the two work closely together on missions given by Dante.

Sloth possesses the unique ability to transform her body into a liquid, water-like state. This power allows her to slip through small spaces, travel quickly through bodies of water, and attack by drowning or crushing enemies with high-pressure water. She can also alter her hair and eye color to a certain extent, facilitating her espionage work. As a homunculus, she has a regenerative healing factor fueled by a Philosopher's Stone, though her watery form gives her a unique resistance to physical damage, allowing her to reconstitute herself from scattered droplets.

The character experiences a degree of development in her final confrontation. During a battle at an abandoned warehouse, she attempts to capture Alphonse and kill the Elric brothers. However, she is severely weakened by a physical remnant of Trisha Elric’s body, which acts as a fatal weakness for any homunculus. In a desperate act to protect her, Wrath fuses his body with hers, but he has previously absorbed Trisha’s remains, causing Sloth to become immobilized. Seizing the opportunity, Edward uses alchemy to transmute her liquid body into ethanol, causing her to slowly evaporate. In her final moments, her cold demeanor fades as she displays a calm, accepting expression and tells the boys to clean up after themselves, a final echo of the maternal instincts she spent her existence trying to deny.
