Description
Dorochet, also known as Dolcetto, is a supporting character from the anime and manga series Fullmetal Alchemist. He is a human chimera who was created by fusing his genetic material with that of a dog, a transformation he underwent after being injured as a soldier in the Amestrian military. Rather than being a volunteer, he was taken to a military laboratory for human experimentation following his injury on the battlefield, a tragic origin he nevertheless faces with a surprisingly positive outlook, stating that he is at least grateful to be alive.
In terms of personality, Dorochet is defined by his unwavering loyalty, a trait he largely attributes to his canine DNA. He is a short, fast, and optimistic individual who maintains a cheerful disposition despite his grim past. However, he also struggles with a sensitivity about his combat abilities, becoming easily frustrated when teased or when he is defeated, as he often finds himself outmatched by exceptionally powerful opponents.
His primary role in the story is as a loyal subordinate to the homunculus Greed. Dorochet resides with his fellow chimeras, Martel and Roa, at the Devil's Nest bar, which serves as Greed's hideout. He is tasked by Greed with helping to kidnap Alphonse Elric in order to learn the secret of his soul being bonded to a suit of armor. During this mission, he demonstrates himself to be a decent strategist, knowing when to use lethal force and when to pull his blows.
Dorochet's key relationships are with his leader and creator, Greed, and his chimera companions. His loyalty to Greed is absolute, compelling him to fight even in hopeless situations. This bond is so strong that he openly laments his own dog-like nature when it forces him to rush back into a deadly battle instead of fleeing to safety. He shares a close camaraderie with his fellow chimera, Roa and Martel, as they are united by their shared suffering as experimental subjects and their devotion to Greed.
His development in the narrative is tragic but consistent with his loyal nature. During the military assault on the Devil's Nest led by King Bradley, Dorochet has several opportunities to escape. After being stabbed by Bradley, he survives long enough to return to the battlefield, cut Alphonse free from his chains, and ask him to help Martel escape. Demonstrating his defining characteristic to the end, Dorochet chooses to engage the Führer in direct combat alongside Roa. His fate differs between adaptations. In the manga and the 2009 anime series Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, he is sliced in half by King Bradley and dies on the spot. In the 2003 anime series, he survives the Devil's Nest incident only to be killed and eaten by the homunculus Gluttony while protecting Greed.
Notable abilities include his proficiency with a katana, making him a decent swordsman. He possesses the enhanced speed and agility of a chimera, as well as a canine's heightened sense of smell, which allows him to detect enemies from a great distance.
