TV-Series
Description
Denny Bloch, also referred to as Denny Brosh in some sources, is a character in the Japanese manga and anime series Fullmetal Alchemist. He serves as a sergeant in the Amestrian State Military and is the loyal partner of Second Lieutenant Maria Ross. His name is subject to variations in translation, but both spellings refer to the same character. Physically, he is a young man with blonde hair, green eyes, and hair cut to neck length. His appearance, apart from his braided back hair, has been noted to subtly resemble the protagonist Edward Elric.

In terms of background, Denny lives with his mother and is the eldest of five siblings, with his youngest sibling being nearly a newborn at the time of the story. He is introduced alongside Maria Ross when they are assigned to protect the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, from the serial killer known as Scar. His personality is a mixture of contrasting traits. He is depicted as rather lazy and naturally nosy, yet he can also be emotional and somewhat childish. Denny is highly sensitive to criticism, often falling into despair at the slightest insult, and he has a great deal of difficulty hiding his true feelings, which often show plainly on his face.

Denny's primary motivation is closely tied to his partner, Maria Ross, for whom he harbors a significant infatuation. He is deeply devoted to her and is keenly protective of her reputation. This devotion drives much of his actions throughout the series. When Ross is framed for the murder of Brigadier General Maes Hughes, Denny is one of her most vocal defenders. He notes inconsistencies in the evidence against her, such as the ballistics of her service pistol, and tries to act as a witness in her defense, only to be turned away. After Ross is reportedly executed by Colonel Roy Mustang for the crime, Denny is deeply saddened by the news. This event creates a strong anti-Mustang sentiment within him, leading him to believe Mustang is a heartless killer.

Denny's role in the overarching story is that of a supporting character whose loyalty places him on a path that intersects with the main conflict. Believing his partner to be dead, he harbors a grudge against Mustang. However, during the coup d'état on the Promised Day, while on break at his home after a night shift, Denny witnesses the chaos caused by Mustang's insurrection. He rushes into Central City to help fight against the supposed "demon" who killed his partner. It is at this moment that he hears Maria Ross's voice broadcasting support for Mustang's rebellion over the radio. Recognizing her voice instantly, he decides to approach the military as a negotiator and surrender, solely to confirm if she is alive. The reunion with Maria Ross is highly emotional, with Denny bursting into tears upon seeing her. He then joins Mustang's resistance group, putting aside his previous hatred to fight alongside his partner.

Key relationships define Denny. His most important connection is with Maria Ross. While his feelings for her are apparent, they are not reciprocated in the same way, though she clearly cares for him as a friend and comrade. So significant is his inability to keep a secret that when Maria Ross is revealed to be alive, Alex Louis Armstrong asks her if he should inform Denny. Ross vehemently refuses, begging him not to, as she knows the truth would be easily read on Denny's face. This highlights that while he is a loyal ally, his emotional transparency is a liability in matters of secrecy. Outside of this partnership, he has a working relationship with the Elric brothers and a brief, negative association with Roy Mustang, whom he initially views as a murderer.

Over the course of the narrative, Denny's development is seen in his journey from grief and vengeance to a joyful reunion and a realignment of his loyalties. He starts as a grieving subordinate seeking justice for his partner and ends as a soldier fighting alongside her in a larger rebellion against a corrupt government. He and Maria Ross eventually fall victim to the Nationwide Transmutation Circle but are among those revived by the actions of Van Hohenheim. Regarding notable abilities, Denny does not possess any alchemical skills or special combat techniques. He is an ordinary soldier whose primary "ability" is his steadfast, if emotionally transparent, loyalty and his service as a standard member of the military. He is notably not skilled at keeping secrets, a trait that is both his greatest flaw in a world of conspiracies and a testament to his honest nature.
