Description
Alphonse Elric, often called Al, is the younger brother of Edward Elric. He was born in the rural town of Resembool in the country of Amestris to parents Trisha Elric and Van Hohenheim. In his childhood, he was a kind and gentle boy who loved his mother deeply and looked up to his absent father, holding onto hope that he would one day return. After his mother fell ill and passed away, a young Alphonse and his brother could not accept her death. Devoting themselves to the study of alchemy, they attempted the ultimate taboo: human transmutation to bring her back to life. The attempt failed catastrophically. Alphonse lost his entire physical body, and his brother Edward sacrificed his right arm to bind Alphonse's soul to a large suit of armor. A blood seal drawn on the inside of the armor's neck is what anchors his soul to it; if this seal is completely damaged, he will cease to exist. Following this event, the brothers burned down their childhood home to sever their ties and set out on a journey to find the Philosopher's Stone, the only object believed powerful enough to restore their original bodies.

Alphonse’s personality is a calm and compassionate counterpart to his older brother’s hot-headed impulsiveness. While Edward is often violent, loud, and stubborn, Alphonse is quiet, polite, and a natural peacemaker. He has a gentle and kind-hearted nature, often showing a soft spot for stray animals, particularly cats, which frequently leads to good-natured arguments with his brother. Despite his gentle demeanor, he possesses a hidden temper and a strong will, and he can become formidable when truly angered. Because he cannot feel physical sensations, sleep, or taste food, he often expresses a simple wish to one day be able to eat apple pie or feel the warmth of a meal. Though he never complains, his situation does lead to moments of deep insecurity, such as when he worries about being a burden to his brother or, most critically, when an enemy questions whether his memories and identity are even real.

Al’s primary motivation is to restore his own body and his brother’s lost limbs, thereby returning their lives to normal. He is driven by a powerful sense of loyalty to Edward, who sacrificed so much to save him. He often serves as his brother’s emotional anchor, pulling him back from reckless actions and reminding him of the value of life and the people around them. His role in the story is that of a steady, reliable partner and a moral compass for the duo. His large, imposing suit of armor often leads strangers to mistakenly identify him as the "Fullmetal Alchemist" (a title that actually belongs to his much shorter brother), a recurring joke that deeply annoys Edward. He is also a strategic fighter and a skilled alchemist in his own right, capable of holding his own in combat when separated from his brother.

His most important relationship is undoubtedly with his brother, Edward. Their bond is the emotional core of their journey; they are each other’s support and only constant companion. Edward carries immense guilt for Alphonse’s condition, while Alphonse is fiercely protective of Edward, determined to prevent him from sacrificing himself. Their relationship is also deeply connected to their teacher, Izumi Curtis, a stern but caring woman who trained them in both alchemy and hand-to-hand combat on a desolate island, forcing them to learn the principle of "One is All, and All is One". He also shares a deep, platonic bond with their childhood friend and mechanic, Winry Rockbell, who builds and repairs Edward’s automail prosthetics.

Throughout the story, Alphonse undergoes significant development. Initially, he cannot perform alchemy without a transmutation circle because the trauma of the human transmutation caused him to lose the memory of what he saw inside the "Gate of Truth." However, after a near-death experience in which the blood of a dying friend splashes onto his blood seal, he regains those memories and acquires the powerful ability to transmute simply by clapping his hands together, just like his brother. He also faces a profound existential crisis, questioning whether he is truly Edward's brother or just a soulless puppet with fabricated memories. This doubt is only resolved by reaffirming his connections and shared past with his family. In the final conflict, his development culminates in a selfless act where he willingly gives up his soul to restore his brother’s arm, trusting that Edward will find a way to bring him back.

Notable abilities include his mastery of hand-to-hand combat. Despite Edward being a skilled fighter, Alphonse has never lost a sparring match against his older brother, demonstrating his superior physical prowess. As a suit of armor, he is nearly invulnerable to conventional weapons like bullets and blades, and he does not tire, need to eat, or breathe, giving him unique tactical advantages. His heavy body does make stealth nearly impossible due to the loud clanking of his movements. As an alchemist, he is highly proficient in transmutation, and after regaining his memories of the Gate, he becomes a powerful "circle-less" alchemist, able to perform transmutations instantly by clapping his hands together, a skill derived from having witnessed the fundamental principles of alchemy.
