Description
Edward Elric, often referred to by his military title of "Fullmetal Alchemist," is the young protagonist of his story. Born in the small rural town of Resembool, he is a prodigy in the field of alchemy, becoming the youngest State Alchemist in the history of the fictional country of Amestris at the age of twelve. He has golden eyes and blonde hair, which he typically wears tied back in a braid, and is notably short for his age, a trait about which he is extremely sensitive. His most distinctive physical feature is his automail, a type of advanced prosthesis, replacing his missing right arm and left leg.

Edward's background is defined by a profound personal tragedy. After his mother, Trisha Elric, died of an illness when he was young, he and his younger brother, Alphonse, devoted themselves to the study of alchemy in a desperate attempt to bring her back. They attempted the ultimate alchemical taboo: human transmutation. The attempt failed catastrophically due to the Law of Equivalent Exchange, the principle that something of equal value must be lost to gain something else. Edward lost his left leg as the toll for crossing through the Gate of Truth and glimpsing vast alchemical knowledge. In a final, desperate act to save Alphonse, whose entire body was taken by the Gate, Edward sacrificed his own right arm to bind his brother's soul to a large suit of armor.

This event is the primary engine for his motivations. Edward is driven by a powerful sense of responsibility and love for his brother, Alphonse, whom he considers his most important family. His main goal is not to restore his own limbs, but to find a way to return Alphonse to his original human body, believing the accident to be his fault. This quest leads him to join the State Military as a dog of the military, a position he accepts reluctantly but sees as necessary to access resources and information, primarily about the legendary Philosopher's Stone, which is rumored to be able to bypass the law of equivalent exchange.

In terms of personality, Edward is complex. He is often hot-headed, impulsive, and quick to act on his emotions rather than overthinking a situation. Despite his genius-level intellect, he can be childish, especially when it comes to his hatred of needles and milk, or when his short stature is commented upon, which triggers an exaggerated and explosive reaction. Beneath this fiery exterior, however, he is deeply selfless, idealistic, and possesses a strong sense of justice. He firmly believes in the concept of "Equivalent Exchange" as a guiding philosophy for life, though the events of his journey challenge and mature this worldview. He is fiercely independent, often feeling that his problems are his alone to solve and refusing to let others bear the burden of his mistakes.

Edward's role in the story is as the driving force of the narrative. Alongside Alphonse, he travels across Amestris, investigating alchemical mysteries, clashing with rogue alchemists, and uncovering a vast military conspiracy involving immortal beings known as homunculi. His relationships are central to the story. His bond with Alphonse is the emotional core of the series, with Edward willing to sacrifice anything for his brother. His childhood friend, Winry Rockbell, is his automail mechanic and eventual wife. She is a constant source of support and a grounding presence in his life, despite their frequent arguments. He also shares a significant mentor-student bond with his teacher, Izumi Curtis, who taught him both alchemy and martial arts, and a complicated but respectful rivalry with Colonel Roy Mustang, his superior officer in the military.

Throughout his journey, Edward undergoes significant development. He begins as a gifted but arrogant boy who believes alchemy can solve everything, including reversing death. The horrific consequences of his attempt to resurrect his mother, and later tragedies such as the fate of Nina Tucker, teach him humility and the irreversible nature of loss. He learns that the world does not always follow the fair rules of equivalent exchange. By the story's end, his values have shifted away from the pursuit of power or even alchemy itself. In a climactic act of selflessness, he ultimately sacrifices his own ability to perform alchemy, his very "Gate of Truth," as the equivalent price to restore his brother's body, demonstrating that he has come to value human connection and life far more than any supernatural power.

Edward is a formidable combatant. His alchemy is unique because after seeing the Gate of Truth, he no longer needs to draw a transmutation circle; he can perform transmutations simply by clapping his hands together, which forms a complete circle with his arms and body. This allows him to transmute materials almost instantly in battle, commonly shaping the ground into powerful constructs or transmuting his automail arm into a blade. This alchemical prowess is combined with rigorous hand-to-hand combat training he received from Izumi Curtis, making him an agile and resourceful fighter despite his prosthetic limbs.
