Description
Marechal Bradley, also known as Orgulho, is the Führer of the nation of Amestris in the 2003 anime adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist. He is a homunculus created by Dante, who considers him her greatest creation due to his ability to age like a normal human, unlike the other homunculi. Bradley was originally a human who was transformed through alchemical experiments involving a Philosopher’s Stone. He is the most powerful among the seven homunculi and serves as Dante’s second-in-command. Bradley’s background is rooted in a military upbringing; he was selected from orphan candidates and subjected to brutal training, emerging as the only survivor of the experiment that granted him his powers. His public persona is that of a charismatic and somewhat eccentric leader, but this masks a deeply deceptive and cruel nature. He takes pleasure in manipulating others and views humans as inferior beings, often treating them as playthings or tools. Despite his coldness, he maintains a genuine affection for his adoptive wife and son, Selim Bradley, though in this continuity Selim is a normal human boy used as part of Bradley’s disguise. Bradley’s motivations stem from his role as Dante’s agent and his own pride in his power. He orchestrates key events in the story, including the Ishvalan Civil War and the pursuit of the Elric brothers, to further Dante’s plan. His role is central as the public face of the homunculi’s conspiracy and a formidable obstacle for the protagonists. Key relationships include his rivalry with Roy Mustang, who eventually discovers his true identity, and his fatherly bond with Selim, whom he protects even while using him. Development occurs as Bradley’s weakness is revealed: the skull containing his original human remains, which can weaken or kill him. In his final confrontation, he is defeated by Mustang using this weakness. Bradley’s notable abilities include the Ultimate Eye, which grants him near-precognitive vision, allowing him to predict any movement or attack. This, combined with his superhuman swordsmanship and reflexes, makes him a devastating combatant. Unlike other homunculi, he does not possess rapid regeneration, as his Philosopher’s Stone is consumed by aging, but his physical prowess and tactical intellect compensate. His defining trait is his pride, which drives his actions and ultimately contributes to his downfall.
