Description
Gula, more commonly known by his English name Gluttony, is a homunculus, an artificial human created to represent the sin of gluttony. He is distinguished by his childlike, simple-minded personality and an endless, all-consuming hunger that dictates most of his actions. Physically, he has a short, obese build, is bald, and has small, unfocused white eyes and oversized teeth. His Ouroboros tattoo, the mark of a homunculus, is located on his tongue.

Created by the being known as Father, Gula was originally an experiment in an attempt to replicate the Gate of Truth, the source of all alchemical power. This failed experiment resulted in his signature ability: his stomach is not a normal organ but a gateway to an infinite, dark, and seemingly lifeless dimensional void. When sufficiently agitated, he can open a gaping mouth in his torso, revealing large fang-like ribs and a single eye. This "false Gate of Truth" can release a powerful energy beam that instantly consumes anything within its line of sight, pulling it into the void inside him. Beyond this ultimate attack, his primary weapons are his incredibly powerful jaws, capable of biting through steel, stone, and even diamond-hard carbon structures. He also possesses immense physical strength and surprising agility for his size, along with a highly acute sense of smell used for tracking individuals over long distances.

Gula's motivations are exceptionally straightforward, driven almost entirely by the desire to eat. He divides the world into two categories: things he is permitted to eat and things he is not. He has a particular fondness for eating humans, specifically noting a preference for young women. He displays little to no malice in his actions, acting more out of simple, instinctual drive than cruelty, though he can become vicious and angry when his potential meals resist or escape him. He is not intelligent and has difficulty acting independently, preferring to follow the orders of his fellow homunculi, to whom he shows genuine affection and loyalty.

His most significant relationship is with Lust, another homunculus for whom he acts as a constant, devoted companion. He looks up to her as an older sister or mother figure, and she often guides him, giving him permission to eat or instructing him to stop. When Lust is killed, Gula is thrown into a state of profound grief and disorientation. In the 2003 anime adaptation, this grief is used against him, as he is stripped of his Ouroboros mark and reduced to a mindless, savage beast that ultimately consumes his own master, Dante. In the manga and 2009 anime, his grief transforms into a focused, burning rage directed at Lust's killer, Roy Mustang, leading him to lose control and unleash his false Gate of Truth in a destructive rampage.

Throughout the story, Gula serves as a powerful enforcer, a tracker, and a tool for disposing of evidence for his creators. His role in the narrative culminates when he is devoured by his own brother, Pride, the homunculus representing pride. Seeing that Gula’s Philosopher's Stone core has been nearly depleted from too many regenerations, Pride absorbs him to replenish his own power, an ironic end for a creature defined by consumption.
