Description
Solf J. Kimblee, also known as the Crimson Alchemist, is a former State Alchemist who plays a significant role as an antagonist. Before the main events of the story, he was a key figure in the Ishval Civil War, where his explosive combat alchemy caused massive destruction and earned him a fearsome reputation. Following the war, he was imprisoned for his brutal actions, specifically for turning his abilities on individuals not sanctioned by the military. He is later released and reinstated to serve as a special agent for the homunculus Führer, King Bradley.
In terms of personality, Kimblee is a complex and unusual figure. He is a composed, articulate, and often polite individual who presents himself as a gentleman, frequently wearing an all-white suit. Beneath this calm exterior, however, is a deeply amoral and sadistic nature. He is not driven by traditional notions of good or evil but by a personal philosophy centered on conviction and the will to survive. He holds immense respect for individuals who remain true to their own beliefs and values, regardless of what those values are. For instance, he respects the Elric brothers' resolve not to kill and admires the Rockbell doctors for their dedication to saving lives, even as he himself orchestrates death on a massive scale. His motivation is a detached curiosity to observe which side of a conflict—human or homunculus—will ultimately prove superior through what he sees as the principle of survival of the fittest. He allies himself with the homunculi not out of loyalty, but simply to watch the outcome of the coming change.
Kimblee's role in the story is that of a dangerous and unpredictable agent of the homunculi. He is tasked with hunting down key characters such as Scar and Dr. Tim Marcoh, and he also manipulates Edward and Alphonse Elric by taking their friend Winry Rockbell hostage to ensure their cooperation. His key relationships are defined by his philosophy. He clashes with Scar, who seeks revenge for the massacre of his people. He shows a chilling admiration for Edward's principles even while trying to kill him. A pivotal relationship forms with the homunculus Pride, who ultimately absorbs Kimblee into his body to use his soul as fuel for his Philosopher's Stone.
Over the course of the narrative, Kimblee does not undergo a moral redemption, but his character is fully revealed through his final moments. After being absorbed by Pride, his incredible willpower and adherence to his own code allow him to retain his individuality within the sea of suffering souls that comprise the homunculus. In a final act, he rebels against Pride from the inside, not for heroic reasons, but out of disgust for the homunculus's hypocrisy. Pride, who looks down on humans as inferior, tries to take a human body to save his own life. This betrayal of his stated principles so offends Kimblee's commitment to conviction that he cripples Pride from within, allowing Edward Elric to defeat him. This act represents the culmination of his character, showing that his dedication to his personal philosophy overrides even his self-preservation.
Kimblee possesses notable abilities centered on his unique form of alchemy, which he uses to create explosions. His transmutation circles are tattooed on his palms, with a sun symbol on his right and a moon on his left. By putting his hands together, he combines these symbols to create a hexagram, allowing him to transmute any matter he touches into a volatile explosive. This ability gives him immense destructive power, from demolishing buildings to causing pinpoint blasts. He also has incredibly sharp hearing, which he uses to sense his surroundings. He is physically formidable, capable of dodging attacks from skilled fighters like Scar and gunfire from close range. His most dangerous power-ups come from Philosopher's Stones. With a stone, he can bypass the law of equivalent exchange, creating vastly more powerful explosions without needing to clap his hands. He possesses a truly extraordinary mental fortitude, demonstrated when he is absorbed by Pride; despite being surrounded by countless agonizing souls that would normally erase a person's identity, Kimblee finds their screams to be like a lullaby and retains his sense of self through sheer will.
