Description
Pop, also romanized as Popp, is one of the central characters of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. He is one of the five Disciples of Avan and becomes the closest companion and steady partner of the protagonist Dai. He comes from the remote village of Lankarks, where his father Junk ran a weapons shop and his mother Stinu raised him. At fifteen years old, after meeting the hero Avan, he ran away from home to become Avan's self-appointed apprentice and train as a magician.
At the start of the story, Pop is portrayed as cowardly and lazy. He loses his nerve against stronger opponents, makes excuses, and even tries to abandon his friends when danger appears. He is talkative and boastful in words but unreliable in action, and he has a lecherous side that often places him in comic situations. Through the course of the journey, however, he changes significantly. His first major turning point is the battle against Crocodine, when he chooses to stand against an opponent he cannot defeat in order to protect a friend, a choice that leaves a strong impression even on Crocodine himself. From that point forward, he repeatedly risks his life for the sake of others, and he later states plainly that living while abandoning his comrades would be worse than dying.
His motivations gradually shift from self-interest to a genuine desire to protect his friends, particularly Maam, toward whom he develops romantic feelings. He also carries the ambition to become a great magician and to stand beside Dai as a reliable ally. The contrast between his ordinary upbringing and the remarkable births of his companions becomes a source of deep insecurity, but he ultimately overcomes it by awakening his own unique spiritual power, the soul of courage, which also elevates his magical abilities.
Within the group, Pop acts as both a morale keeper and a strategist. He is often the one who drives the party forward, and his tactical mind proves decisive in many battles. He is skilled at provoking enemies, drawing them into reckless actions, and exploiting the openings this creates. Killvearn of the demon army regards him as the member who must be eliminated first, believing that if Pop died, the group would never reach the Demon King Vearn. In the final confrontation, Pop confounds Vearn himself by finding the weakness in Vearn's ultimate technique, the Tenchi Mato no Kamae, and devising the means to break it.
Pop's key relationships shape much of his growth. His bond with Dai is the strongest, as the two become each other's closest friend and remain partners through the entire adventure. Maam is his love interest, and although he believes his feelings are private, they are obvious to nearly everyone around him. He initially sees Hyunckel as a rival for Maam's attention, but over time he comes to respect him as a fellow disciple of Avan. He develops a bickering but warm friendship with Princess Leona, who calls him out on his weaknesses, and he holds deep reverence for Avan. Under the harsh training of the great magician Matoriv, he grows tremendously as a spellcaster. He also forms a close bond with Matoriv's young companion Merle, who secretly loves him, though he remains unaware of her feelings.
Pop's abilities expand greatly over the course of the story. He begins as a user of fire spells of the Mera family, such as Merami and Merazoma, as well as ice spells like Hyadarko. He later learns the gravity spell Betan and, after intense training with Matoriv, masters Medoroa, also known as Frizz Cracker, a powerful combination spell created by Matoriv and one of the strongest in the series. He grows into a great magician with power comparable to a sage, including the ability to cast healing magic, which ordinary battle mages cannot do. He shows exceptional talent, once reproducing the forbidden Finger Flare Bombs technique at partial strength despite the risk of shortening his lifespan. He also makes clever use of equipment, including a magical staff forged by the legendary swordsmith Lon Berk and the Shaha's Mirror passed on by his defeated opponent Sigma. His greatest act of sacrifice occurs when he uses the self-destructive spell Megante to restore the memory of an amnesiac Dai during the battle against the Dragon Knight Baran, dying in the attempt and later being revived under extraordinary circumstances.
By the end of the story, Pop's magical power is recognized as among the highest of any human, and he is regarded by both allies and enemies as one of the most dangerous and sharp-witted of Avan's Disciples. His journey represents the growth of an ordinary person through courage, effort, and loyalty, and he remains at Dai's side as his closest friend and partner until the very end of the adventure.
