Description
José Antonio Macías, also known professionally as Pepe Toño Macías, is a highly recognized Mexican voice actor and dubbing director with a career spanning over three decades. Born on September 19, 1967, in Zacapoaxtla, Puebla, his interest in voice work began in childhood, helping his father produce radio novellas at Grabadora México. Although he initially studied law, he ultimately pursued his passion for acting, taking courses at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) before officially entering the dubbing field in 1989.
Macías is perhaps best known for his long-running role as James of Team Rocket in the Pokémon anime franchise. He has voiced the character consistently across the main series, numerous specials, and films such as Pokémon Heroes - Latias & Latios, Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, and Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, among many others. His portrayal is noted for its comedic touch, incorporating improvisations that have become iconic for Latin American audiences, including the self-referential phrase "Moltres el guajolote Macías". In addition to James, his work in the Pokémon universe includes voicing the Detective Pikachu in the live-action film and taking on the role of the narrator for the series Pokémon Horizons.
His extensive voice work in anime covers a wide range of characters. These include Despa in Ranking of Kings, Karen Travers in Scarlet Nexus, Mikio Shirato in Megalobox 2: Nomad, Chocolove McDonell in Shaman King, Ari in Vinland Saga, Rekka Hoshimiya in Fire Force, Fat Gum in My Hero Academia and its film My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission, Bumblebee in Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy, Malcolm Eden in Levius, and Ken Masters in the DVD version of Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. Beyond these, he is also the voice of Iruka Umino in Naruto and Mousse in Ranma ½.
Beyond anime, Macías is a prominent figure in Latin American dubbing for live-action film and television. He is the official Spanish voice for actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Chris Evans, and Ryan Reynolds. His notable roles include Steve Rogers / Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wade Wilson / Deadpool, the Joker in The Dark Knight, and Legolas in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. He has also lent his voice to numerous animated films and series, such as Emmet in The Lego Movie, Mort in the Madagascar franchise, and Edd (Doble D) in Ed, Edd n Eddy.
In addition to his acting, Macías has worked extensively as a dubbing director, particularly on Marvel-related projects since 2005. His contributions to the industry were recognized with an Auris Award in 2016 for Best Comedy Actor for his work on Deadpool.
