Description
Koji Ishida is a middle-aged man introduced as a fellow debtor on the cruise ship Espoir. He carries a substantial financial burden, having incurred debts that have put significant strain on his family. He has a wife who is struggling to evade debt collectors and a son who is also saddled with his own debts. Ishida’s primary motivation for participating in the high-stakes gambles is a selfless one: he seeks to repay the debts of his wife and son, hoping to secure a better future for them despite his own failures. His personal debt is later revealed to be 1.5 million yen, with an additional 3 million yen owed by his son.

In terms of personality, Ishida is timid, shy, and presents as a typical gullible individual. He is characterized as someone who appears infinitely weak, yet possesses an inner strength that allows him to maintain his humanity in the face of death. He is a family man who feels a profound sense of guilt toward his loved ones, believing they have suffered because of his incompetence. Despite his gentle and unassuming nature, he shows remarkable resolve and dignity when confronted with his own mortality.

Ishida's role in the story is significant both as a companion to the protagonist, Kaiji Itou, and as a catalyst for Kaiji's personal development. On the Espoir, Ishida is tricked by another passenger named Sakai and is left for dead. However, Kaiji feels indebted to Ishida because he was the only person on the ship who showed genuine concern for Kaiji's life. In a moment of defiance against the selfishness around him, Kaiji chooses to rescue Ishida. Later, both participate in a gambling event at the Starside Hotel called the Human Derby. After successfully crossing the first race, Ishida earns a voucher worth 10 million yen. During the second race, the Electrified Steel Beam Crossing, Ishida is paralyzed by an overwhelming fear of death and realizes he lacks the fortitude to proceed. In a final, selfless act, he entrusts his valuable voucher to Kaiji, asking him to use it to pay off his wife's debt. He then forces himself to stifle his own screams as he falls from the beam to his death, deliberately avoiding any sound that might distract or agitate Kaiji, who is still attempting to cross.

His key relationships are centered on his family and on Kaiji. His son, Hiromitsu Ishida, later appears in the story working in an underground labor camp, where he expresses bitter resentment toward his deceased father, blaming him for his misfortunes. Despite this, Kaiji remembers Koji Ishida's dignity and later uses his winnings to pay off Hiromitsu's debt, fulfilling the promise made to his father. The bond between Ishida and Kaiji is unique in the harsh world of the series, as Ishida is one of the very few characters who sincerely believes in Kaiji and trusts him completely until the end.

Ishida’s development is most evident in his final moments. Though he is initially portrayed as weak and cowardly, he dies with a quiet courage that deeply impacts Kaiji. He demonstrates a form of strength by recognizing his own limitations and placing his faith in another person. His dignified death serves as a lasting source of inspiration for Kaiji, who later recalls Ishida as an example of a person who never loses his will or humanity, even in the face of utter despair. As for notable abilities, Ishida possesses no special skills or strategic acumen. His significance is purely emotional and thematic, defined by his unwavering decency and his ultimate act of self-sacrifice.
