Description
Andou is a secondary character who appears during the first major story arc of Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor, known as the Espoir arc. He is introduced as a fellow debtor trapped on the same cruise liner, where a high-stakes gambling event is being held to give desperate individuals a chance to repay their crippling debts.

Regarding his background, Andou is presented as a man who has found himself in a similarly dire financial situation as the protagonist, Kaiji Itou. He is brought into Kaiji's group because he fits certain conditions needed for their strategy to survive the card game known as "Restricted Rock-Paper-Scissors." His physical appearance is notably unremarkable, and he is often depicted with a weak and somewhat pathetic demeanor, which initially makes him seem harmless and even submissive.

Personality-wise, Andou is defined by his cowardice, greed, and profound selfishness. He appears obedient and loyal on the surface, but this is a mask for his true nature. He is incapable of formulating his own strategies and is content to rely entirely on Kaiji's leadership and plans to progress through the game. When he believes an opportunity for personal gain has arisen, he reveals himself to be completely untrustworthy and willing to sacrifice anyone, including those who have helped him, for his own survival and profit. His demeanor is often whiny and pathetic, especially when he is confronted or his actions are questioned.

His primary motivation is simple self-preservation and avarice. He is desperate to escape the game not only debt-free but also enriched. This desire overrides any sense of loyalty or gratitude he might owe to Kaiji, who was responsible for getting the group this far. When the chance to sell his stars for a large sum of money appears, he seizes it without hesitation, seeing it as a logical choice to secure his future and leave Kaiji to his fate.

Andou's role in the story is that of a betrayer and a foil to the protagonist. He represents the cynical, self-interested side of human nature that Kaiji is forced to contend with. His treachery occurs at a critical moment of vulnerability for Kaiji, deepening the protagonist's despair and demonstrating the cruel reality of their situation where friendship is a fragile and often worthless commodity. He serves as a cautionary example of how pressure and greed can corrupt a person, turning a supposed ally into a deadly threat.

Key relationships define his actions. His relationship with Kaiji is entirely parasitic; he depends on Kaiji for his survival but feels no loyalty to him. His most significant interaction is with Furuhata, a former coworker of Kaiji who is also part of the group. Andou successfully manipulates Furuhata, preying on his fears and greed to convince him to join in the betrayal, thus turning both men against Kaiji. After their plan fails, the relationship between Andou and Furuhata deteriorates into bickering and mutual blame.

In terms of character development, Andou is largely static. He begins as a seemingly meek and cooperative ally and is quickly revealed to be a treacherous coward. He does not undergo a redemption arc or show signs of remorse. Even after his betrayal is thwarted, he does not own up to his actions, instead making excuses and complaining when he faces the consequences. His character serves to highlight the contrast with Kaiji, who, despite his flaws, is capable of selflessness and loyalty. Andou's development, or lack thereof, solidifies his role as an antagonist and a hate sink within the narrative.

Andou possesses no notable strategic or physical abilities. In fact, his actions are marked by incompetence. He makes poor decisions, such as recklessly playing a crucial card that leads to a loss for his team. He is unable to devise his own plans and relies on others to think for him. His only notable "skill" is a talent for deception, as he initially manages to project an image of innocence and submission that allows him to get close to Kaiji and Furuhata before revealing his true, backstabbing nature.
