Description
Ashim Jamal is a central antagonist from the anime Dragonaut - The Resonance. He holds the position of second prince of Gilead on Mars and serves as the leader of the Gilead army. His authority is further solidified by his role as the resonant owner of Garnet MacLaine, a powerful dragon who serves as his closest confidant and enforcer.
Ashim's background is marked by a ruthless and calculating ambition from a very young age. As a child, he wandered into the woods where he first met Garnet, initiating their resonance. It was during his youth that he manipulated Garnet into murdering his own older brother, the first prince, thereby clearing his own path to become the heir to the Gileadian throne. This act was apparently met with indifference by his father, the king, who seemed relieved to be rid of the elder son, suggesting a deeply dysfunctional royal family that contributed to Ashim's development.
In terms of personality, Ashim is portrayed as having a profoundly warped and twisted spirit. He is characterized by a complete lack of conventional morals or concepts of right and wrong, a consequence of being spoiled and given favoritism by his father. His actions are frequently driven by a detached sense of curiosity or personal interest rather than any grand ideology or strategic necessity. This is exemplified by his decision to kidnap the dragon Toa and to kill the Dragonaut Akira Soya, both of which he did simply because he found them interesting. He displays a distinct displeasure toward themes of sincere love and emotional bonds, which may hint at a deep-seated inability to understand or accept such feelings.
Throughout the main story, Ashim functions as a significant mid-boss antagonist. His primary role is to act as an obstacle for the protagonists, Jin Kamishina and his dragon partner Gio. He clashes with them due to his possession of Toa, for whom Jin is searching. During one confrontation, after his subordinate Garnet kills Akira, he engages Jin and Gio in battle while riding Garnet. This fight ends with Ashim and Garnet being overpowered and vaporized by Gio.
Despite his physical death, Ashim's role does not conclude. He is later resurrected from the entity known as Thanatos. In this final stage, he becomes part of Thanatos's collective mental body, existing alongside other deceased characters including Akira, Makina, and Garnet. Even in this form, his personality remains consistent; he does not undertake any major actions, instead continuing to observe events with detached curiosity.
The most critical relationship in Ashim's life is with his dragon, Garnet MacLaine. Their bond is complex; while she is outwardly a high-handed and sadistic warrior, she is utterly loyal to Ashim and acts in a maternal, protective manner toward him. Ashim first met Garnet as a child, and she has served him faithfully ever since, even committing murder on his behalf. Her protective instincts are so strong that she continues to act as a guardian for him even in their final moments together. As a resonant, Ashim's notable abilities are primarily tied to Garnet. He fights alongside her, directing her formidable combat skills as a dragon, which include wielding a sword and engaging in high-powered aerial combat.
