Description
Meiru Sakurai is a central character in the Rockman.EXE anime series, known as the operator of the NetNavi Roll.EXE. She is depicted as a young girl with fair skin, short maroon hair, and brown eyes. Her typical outfit consists of an aqua-colored shirt, a blue vest, a pink skirt, black thigh-high socks, and dark red shoes. Her preference for the color pink is reflected in her clothing, her NetNavi, and her home.
As a childhood friend and classmate of Lan Hikari, Meiru has a longstanding and close relationship with him, often acting as a grounding presence. Her personality is a blend of typically feminine, kind, and soft-spoken traits, but she also possesses a short and explosive temper, which is frequently triggered by Lan’s reckless and thoughtless behavior. She can be assertive and sometimes bossy, particularly towards Lan, and occasionally displays a cunning and sarcastic side. Despite her caring nature, she feels a sense of dependence on Lan and harbors a strong desire to be the one to protect him for a change, rather than always being the one who needs saving.
Throughout the series, Meiru’s primary motivation is her deep care for Lan Hikari. She harbors strong romantic feelings for him, though she does not always fully acknowledge them herself. These feelings become particularly evident when she experiences intense jealousy in response to other girls, such as Princess Pride or Jasmine, showing affection towards Lan. Her desire to be useful and to stand beside him as an equal partner is a driving force in her development, culminating in her wish to fight alongside him.
Her role in the overarching story is significant, as she is one of the most recurring characters besides Lan and MegaMan. While her friends Dex and Yai had diminished roles in certain seasons, Meiru remained a main character, solidifying her position as the main heroine. In the later seasons, including Rockman.EXE Stream, she gains the ability to perform Cross Fusion, a process that merges her with her NetNavi, Roll, to become C.F. Roll. Notably, in the Rockman.EXE Beast season, while other members of the Cross Fusion team participate in battles against the Cybeasts, Meiru and another character, Dingo, do not engage in these fights or utilize Cross Fusion. Her direct involvement in that specific season is limited, with her appearing in episode 4.
Key relationships define her character. Her bond with Lan Hikari is the most central, characterized by childhood intimacy, mutual care, and unspoken romantic tension. Her relationship with her NetNavi, Roll, is one of deep friendship and similarity, as they often share their feelings and support one another. Another important relationship is with the dog-like program, Rush, who was given to her by Lan’s father. Rush has the ability to transform into a Synchro Chip, which is the key component that allows Meiru to perform Cross Fusion. She often uses her cunning to convince a reluctant Rush to transform.
Meiru undergoes notable character development, particularly in her journey toward becoming a capable fighter. Initially wishing to be less dependent on Lan, she eventually achieves her goal when she successfully performs Cross Fusion for the first time, stepping out of a supporting role to become an active protector. Her romantic feelings for Lan also evolve over time, moving from subtle hints and jealousy to a more open and acknowledged affection by the series' end, culminating in a warm embrace between the two. Her abilities include competent Net Battling skills, as she is a capable operator for Roll. Her most notable ability is Cross Fusion, which grants her a powerful armored form. In this form, she can perform attacks like the Roll Arrow and use Rush to open portals called Rush Holes. Her Cross Fusion form is visually distinct from others, as she is the only member who lacks a visor or mouth guard on her helmet.
