Description
Mr. Tom Carrisford is a supporting character in the anime A Little Princess Sara. He is an English gentleman who spent many years in India as a businessman and was the childhood friend and business partner of Captain Ralph Crewe, Sara Crewe's father. The two men invested together in a diamond mine venture. During their time in India, both fell gravely ill with a high fever. In his delirium, Mr. Carrisford abandoned Captain Crewe and wandered away. When he recovered, he discovered that his friend had died and that the diamond mines had become enormously valuable. This left Mr. Carrisford extremely wealthy but consumed with guilt, as he believed his actions had contributed to Crewe's death and that Sara, the captain's daughter, had been left orphaned and penniless. His primary motivation throughout the story is to find Sara and make amends for his perceived responsibility in her misfortune.

Mr. Carrisford is portrayed as a kind and deeply sensitive man, though his health is severely broken by his past illness and his constant worry. He appears as a frail, sickly individual who requires care and is often seen wrapped in furs even indoors. Despite his physical weakness, he possesses a strong sense of duty and a tender heart. When his Indian servant, Ram Dass, tells him about a poor girl living in the attic of the neighboring boarding school, Mr. Carrisford takes a childlike pleasure in devising secret gifts of food, warm bedding, books, and other comforts to improve her harsh life, becoming her anonymous benefactor, whom Sara later calls "the Magician." This secret benevolence reveals his compassion and his desire to bring happiness to others even before he learns the girl's identity.

His role in the story is pivotal: he is the agent of Sara's rescue from poverty and cruelty. After moving into the house next to Miss Minchin's Select Seminary, his home becomes connected to Sara's attic room via the rooftops. Through the actions of Ram Dass, he learns about the mistreated servant girl and begins the secret gift-giving. Eventually, when Sara's pet monkey escapes and she returns it to him, the two meet face to face. He recognizes her as Captain Crewe's daughter, and the truth of her identity is revealed. He then formally takes her in as his ward, restores her inheritance from the diamond mines, and removes her from the oppressive control of Miss Minchin.

Key relationships define his character. His bond with Sara is the most significant; he becomes a father figure and protector, filling the void left by her father's death. His relationship with Ram Dass is one of mutual trust and loyalty, with Ram Dass not only serving him but also initiating the secret plan to comfort the girl next door. His relationship with his solicitor, Mr. Carmichael, is one of professional reliance, as Carmichael is tasked with the legal search for Sara. His memory of Captain Crewe haunts him and fuels his quest for redemption.

Over the course of the story, Mr. Carrisford undergoes a notable emotional development. He begins as a guilt-ridden, sorrowful invalid, barely able to function under the weight of his remorse. Through his secret kindness to the unknown girl and especially after discovering she is Sara, his health and spirits improve dramatically. The resolution of his search brings him great relief and joy, replacing his despair with a renewed sense of purpose and the comfort of family. His notable abilities are not physical or combative; rather, they lie in his wealth, his organizational reach (through his servant and lawyer), and his capacity for thoughtful, anonymous generosity. He uses these abilities to quietly transform Sara's life from one of deprivation to one of security and love.
