Description
Keita Kawahira is a descendant of the Kawahira clan, a family with an ancient duty to fight evil spirits by forming contracts with beings known as inukami. Despite this heritage, he was initially considered a failure by his family due to his lackadaisical attitude toward their mission, treating it more like a part-time job, and his inability to successfully bond with any inukami partner. His circumstances changed when a powerful and unconventional inukami named Yoko chose to form a contract with him, making her his partner.
Keita has a complex personality, balancing notable flaws with redeeming qualities. He has a habit of flirting with other women and trying to pursue romantic relationships with them, a behavior that frequently gets him into trouble. He is considered a pervert by many, and his actions have earned him the nickname Ra-ou, or Naked King, among the city's perverts after Yoko repeatedly punishes him by teleporting him naked into public places, leading to his arrest for indecent exposure. His fear of settling down is tied to a specific anxiety about his relationship with Yoko, as he is mortified by the thought that having a child with her might result in a litter of puppies rather than a human baby. However, despite these flaws, Keita possesses a deep-seated kindness that is recognized by other characters, including Yoko herself, and is comparable to the kindness of his cousin, Kaoru. He is determined, generally fearless, and demonstrates genuine loyalty to his friends and the people under his protection.
Keita's primary motivation evolves throughout the story. Initially, he approaches his duties as an inukami tamer with little seriousness, more interested in pursuing other girls. His role in the story is defined by his partnership with Yoko, as they work together to vanquish evil spirits. Over time, his motivations shift from self-interest to a genuine desire to protect others and to understand his own feelings for Yoko. He eventually accepts Yoko not only as his inukami partner but as someone he loves, culminating in mutual declarations of their feelings. A key moment in his development is when he discovers Yoko's secret that she is actually a kitsune, a fox spirit, rather than a true inukami; he accepts her completely, affirming that this revelation does not change their bond. Throughout various serious threats, he grows from a comedic and irresponsible figure into a more resolute protector, demonstrating unwavering determination and tactical ingenuity in battle.
Keita's most significant relationship is with his inukami partner, Yoko. Their contract was formed after he made specific vows to be loyal to her, to be hers, and to be her toy, symbolized by a dog collar he wears as a pact item. Yoko is romantically interested in him, but his wandering eye and her jealous and mischievous nature lead to constant conflict and comedic punishment. Despite this, they develop a deep bond, and he learns to care for her deeply, even if he struggles to express it openly at first. He is also the cousin of Kaoru Kawahira, another inukami tamer who is more successful and has a different approach to their shared duty. His fondness for frogs is a notable personal trait, originating from a childhood friendship with a giant talking frog named Hakusan Meikun, who helped him endure being bullied by three crows.
In terms of notable abilities, Keita is proficient in creating and using magical talismans. He crafts these talismans out of rubber, shaping them like small frogs, and uses them for powerful ranged attacks that are strong enough to injure supernatural entities, including a Grim Reaper. He is also a skilled practitioner of Chinese martial arts, specifically xingyiquan, which allows him to defeat physically formidable opponents such as a former wrestler and hold his own in combat against powerful beings like shinigami. While his martial arts skill has been noted as lacking a certain style by an opponent, his combined physical abilities and magical talismans make him a capable fighter against evil spirits on his own. In expanded narratives, his abilities grow to include traits like enhanced pain tolerance and other powers after visiting a place called the Sea of Fragments. There are also notable differences between his portrayals in the anime and manga; in the manga, Keita is a chain smoker and drinks, and is depicted as being much more serious than his anime counterpart, though he still has problems taking Yoko seriously due to her impulsive behavior. He stands 174cm tall and weighs 64kg.
