Description
Akira Fudo is the protagonist of the Devilman series, a character whose story begins in a state of normalcy before being thrust into a violent and tragic war between humans and demons. He is a Japanese teenager who lives with the family of his childhood friend, Miki Makimura, while his own parents are working abroad or, in some versions of the story, have passed away. Initially, Akira is portrayed as a shy, gentle, and somewhat timid young man, known for his kind heart and tendency to cry for others, a trait that gives him a reputation for being weak. This sensitive nature, however, is the very foundation of his character, representing a pure and deep-seated humanity that becomes his greatest strength.

His life is irrevocably changed by his best friend, Ryo Asuka. Ryo, who believes in the existence of demons hidden within human society, convinces Akira that the only way to fight these creatures is to become like them. To this end, Ryo takes Akira to a Sabbath, a demonic orgy where, in the ensuing chaos, Akira is possessed by Amon, a powerful demon known as the Lord of War. Through an extraordinary act of willpower, Akira manages to suppress Amon’s consciousness and absorb his immense powers while retaining his own human soul and identity. This transformation gives him the ability to become the powerful, horned warrior known as Devilman.

Driven by a deep-seated desire to protect humanity and the people he loves, particularly Miki, Akira embraces his role as Devilman. His primary motivation is to wage a one-man war against the demons who threaten the human race. Despite the terrifying power at his command, his personality remains fundamentally compassionate. He is empathetic, even towards some demons, and is distressed by the violence and suffering he witnesses. His internal conflict is central to his character: he is a being who merges demonic power with a human heart, constantly struggling to ensure that the demonic aspect does not consume his humanity.

Akira’s key relationships are the pillars of his story. His bond with Ryo Asuka is the most complex and fateful. Ryo is his manipulative and enigmatic best friend who orchestrates his transformation and serves as his ally against demons, but whose true nature and motives are far more sinister. His love for Miki Makimura represents the pure, peaceful human life he is fighting to protect. She is his anchor to humanity and a source of emotional strength. His relationship with Miki’s family, who took him in, further grounds him in a world of normalcy and affection that contrasts sharply with the brutal reality of his war against demons.

Throughout the narrative, Akira undergoes a tragic and profound development. He starts as a passive, gentle boy and grows into a proactive, powerful warrior. However, as the war between humans and demons escalates, human society descends into mass paranoia and violence, turning on anyone suspected of being a demon. The story reaches its devastating climax when a crazed mob, manipulated by fear and by Ryo’s machinations, murders Miki and her family. Upon discovering her mutilated body, Akira’s hope for humanity is shattered, and he gives in to a rage so absolute that he slaughters the entire mob, losing a crucial part of his own innocence in the process. This event solidifies his resolve to fight not just demons, but the darkness within humanity itself. His development culminates in a final, apocalyptic battle against Ryo, who is revealed to be Satan. Akira fights to the bitter end, dying at Satan’s hands but ultimately proving that his human capacity for love and compassion was more powerful than any demonic or divine force. His death leaves Satan weeping over the body of the only being he ever truly loved.

In his transformed state as Devilman, Akira possesses a vast array of superhuman abilities. He has immense superhuman strength, speed, durability, and reflexes, allowing him to tear demons apart with his bare hands and withstand devastating attacks. He can fly using the wings that sprout from his back and possesses a powerful healing factor that allows him to recover from severe wounds. His signature offensive abilities include firing powerful energy beams, known as the Devil Beam, from the antenna on his forehead, as well as breathing fire. He also has sharp claws and teeth for close-quarters combat, and possesses limited telepathic abilities, which he can use to communicate with other devilmen or read memories. Some versions of the character also grant him abilities like electrokinesis, teleportation, and even a form of immortality tied to his will and the core idea of his existence.
