TV-Series
Description
Lala is a demonic beast who appears in the later episodes of the original 1972 Devilman anime television series. She is a member of the Demon Tribe, but she stands apart from most of her kind due to her gentle, childish, and comedic demeanor. Physically, she presents herself as a beautiful young woman with blonde hair, but this appearance is an illusion; her real face is that of an old, grotesque woman. The transformation can be undone by something as simple as a sneeze, which causes her face to revert briefly before she corrects it. Lala possesses the unique ability to reshape and transform matter, allowing her to change the form of objects or even alter the appearance of living beings, including her own face.

In terms of personality, Lala is naive, scatterbrained, and openly admits to being a fool, a label that others frequently use for her. She is not taken seriously by other demons and is often treated with contempt or dismissed as useless. Despite her lack of combat prowess, she initially serves as a minor antagonist to Devilman, though she proves to be an ineffective opponent. Her motivations shift dramatically when she mistakes Devilman’s attention for affection and develops a romantic infatuation with him. Believing that he loves her, she decides to betray the Demon Tribe, hoping to win his favor and stay by his side.

Her role in the story is that of a comedic relief character who later becomes a tragic figure. After her betrayal, she joins Devilman in battle against some of his most bizarre and powerful foes. However, her efforts are ultimately futile. The demon Magdora, a fellow beast who remains loyal to the tribe, punishes her for her treachery by incinerating her with his flames, leading to a violent and sorrowful death. The shift from her usual silly behavior to her final, desperate fate underscores the tragedy of her character.

Lala has no significant relationships outside her brief, one-sided attachment to Devilman. She is largely isolated among the Demon Tribe, who view her as a laughingstock. Her development is minimal: she changes from a half-hearted enemy to a devoted, if misguided, ally, only to be destroyed by her former comrades. Her abilities, while visually interesting and useful for disguise or minor tricks, do not grant her any real combat strength, which contributes to her victimization. In the context of the series, she serves as an example of a demon who is neither purely evil nor capable of saving herself, caught between her own foolishness and the harshness of the demon world.
