Description
Charles de Guise is a French colonel serving as an intelligence officer within the French army in Shanghai, the primary setting of the narrative. He is also a French Jew, a detail that profoundly shapes his personal history and motivations. Operating in the chaotic underworld of the city, he forms a strategic alliance with the Qing Bang, a powerful organized crime syndicate. His appearance is distinguished by a muscular build, average height, and long dark hair, often colored brown in adaptations, which is swept to one side and covers one of his eyes. He is almost invariably seen in the formal attire of a French military officer, including a double-breasted jacket and a flowing cape.

De Guise possesses a pragmatic and unconventional approach to combat that sets him apart from many other martial artists in the series. Although he has mastered Hokuto Sonka Ken, a derivative style of the legendary Hokuto Shinken, he often eschews these lethal assassination techniques in favor of conventional firearms and a sword. This preference for practical, modern weapons over traditional martial arts mysticism can irritate more orthodox fighters, such as the formidable Mang Kuangyun. This choice reflects a personality that values efficiency and results, stemming from his background as a military man in a volatile, politically tense environment.

The core of de Guise's personal story and motivation is his deep devotion to his younger sister, Sophie de Guise. Sophie suffers from psychological trauma that has suppressed her memories, a direct result of her harrowing experiences escaping Nazi Germany. Her husband, a non-Jewish German man she was forbidden to marry under Nazi racial laws, was sent to a concentration camp, and her flight from persecution left her psyche shattered. De Guise’s primary personal mission is to protect her and find a way to restore her memory. To this end, he seeks out the protagonist, Kenshiro Kasumi, believing his mastery of Hokuto Shinken's pressure points could heal her. When Kenshiro successfully uses his acupressure techniques to restore Sophie's memories, her subsequent assassination at the hands of the villain Zhang Taiyan becomes a devastating blow that fuels de Guise's desire for revenge.

Throughout the story, de Guise evolves from a mysterious and potentially antagonistic foreign agent into one of Kenshiro Kasumi’s most trusted and steadfast allies. He first appears intervening to prevent a suicide bombing, establishing himself as a wild card with his own agenda. As he and Kenshiro repeatedly come into contact, their mutual respect grows, with Kenshiro eventually coming to consider de Guise a close friend, a "peng you". De Guise provides crucial support to Kenshiro and the Qing Bang, using his military authority to protect them from interference, such as when he orders French troops not to fire on them, and by providing vital intelligence, like revealing that Pan Guanglin is still alive. This alliance demonstrates his complex loyalties, as he navigates his duties to the French military with his personal sense of justice and friendship.

His key relationships are defined by loyalty and loss. His bond with Kenshiro is the most significant, transforming from a working arrangement into a deep friendship. His relationship with Sophie is the emotional anchor of his character, and her death marks a turning point in his narrative. Following her murder, his confrontation with Zhang Taiyan is intense. He ultimately forgoes immediate vengeance, instead carving a cruciform scar on Taiyan's face as a reminder of his sins and a promise of a future battle, demonstrating a degree of control and a commitment to his own code of honor. His final battle is against Liu Feiyan, who challenges him to a duel, judging de Guise unworthy to care for a woman named Erika Arendt. He sustains fatal wounds in this duel.

As he lies dying, Kenshiro uses his pressure point techniques to prolong de Guise's life just long enough for him to witness a vision. His friends stage a glimpse of his dream for the future: a prosperous and peaceful Shanghai where Jewish people can find refuge and live without persecution. Dying in peace, he places his faith in Kenshiro and his companions to make that vision a reality. In a different adaptation of the story, his death comes by the hand of Simeon Nagid instead of Liu Feiyan, illustrating minor variations in the character's fate across different versions of the anime.

In terms of notable abilities, his primary martial art is Hokuto Sonka Ken. This style is a variation of Hokuto Shinken that focuses on using one's chi, or life energy, to strike pressure points, and harnessing one's own inner madness as a weapon. Specific techniques associated with his skill set include the Soki Sho, or Fidelity Mood Palm, a technique that allows him to use his chi to manipulate objects; he can use this power to bend materials into projectiles, break an opponent's weapon, or redirect incoming fire. Another technique in his repertoire is the Choki Kokyu Jutsu, a specialized breathing art that enables him to hold his breath for extended periods, up to ten minutes. Despite mastering these extraordinary abilities, his preference remains the practical reliability of his pistol and sword, making him a unique character who bridges the gap between the world of supernatural martial arts and historical, grounded violence.
