Description
Kappeita Taira, known to almost everyone by his nickname Capeta, is a boy who enters the world of racing by pure chance at the age of ten and, by the episodes spanning from fifteen to fifty-two, has matured into a fourteen-year-old driver on the verge of a major breakthrough. His background is defined by modest means and early responsibility. Raised solely by his father, Shigei Taira, who works long hours for a paving company, Capeta learned to handle household chores from a very young age after his mother passed away. This upbringing instilled in him a quiet, reserved, and dutiful nature, rarely complaining and appearing more reliable than his often-exhausted father. However, this calm exterior masks a deep, tenacious spirit and a fierce will to compete that emerges the moment he sits in a racing machine.

Capeta's personality is a study in contrast. Away from the track, he remains humble, soft-spoken, and somewhat unassuming, a testament to his difficult childhood and his desire not to burden his father. His close friends, Nobu and Monami, are often the ones who speak passionately about his ambitions on his behalf. But behind the wheel, his character transforms completely. He becomes intensely focused, fearless, and unyielding, with a monstrous competitive drive that refuses to accept defeat, regardless of the odds or the quality of his machinery. This period of his life is heavily driven by the motivation to continue racing despite ever-growing financial pressures. The carefree joy of his first kart races has given way to a desperate struggle to fund his career in the more expensive ICA class, forcing him to work odd jobs and confront the real possibility that his dream might end not from a lack of talent, but from a lack of money.

Within the story's narrative, which spans his transition from elementary school to junior high, Capeta serves as the determined heart of the series. His role evolves from a gifted beginner to a serious competitor fighting to legitimize himself without the backing of a professional team. Key relationships define his path. His bond with his father, Shigei, is the emotional foundation of his journey; Shigei's unwavering belief in him and relentless overtime work provide the only financial lifeline for Capeta's racing, and his encouragement is what pushes Capeta forward after devastating setbacks. Nobu Andou, once a schoolyard bully, becomes his indispensable right hand, acting as his mechanic, strategist, and manager, and is the one who secures Capeta a spot at the prestigious Formula Stella Racing School. Monami Suzuki acts as the team's self-appointed coach and biggest cheerleader, providing crucial emotional support. The most significant rival, however, is Naomi Minamoto, the wealthy, talented driver for the Endless Autohouse Racing team. Naomi is the standard by which Capeta measures himself; their unspoken rivalry pushes both of them, and Capeta's ultimate dream is to race against him as an equal.

The development Capeta undergoes in these episodes is profound and often painful. He experiences the harsh realities of higher-level karting, culminating in a desperate race in torrential rain where he pushes his body and machine to the absolute limit, only to lose by a tiny margin and fracture his ribs. This physical and emotional low point, followed by his hospitalization, leads to his next challenge: an invitation to the Formula Stella Racing School, a stepping stone to professional single-seater racing. Here, he faces a new world of manual transmissions and powerful cars. After a promising start, he suffers a devastating crash during a mock race, breaking a strict no-crashing rule and feeling his future crumble. It is his father's unwavering support that pulls him from despair, teaching him that failure does not have to be the end. He recovers, masters the car, and ultimately wins his series, proving his talent and earning the right to continue his ascent.

Capeta's notable abilities are what allow him to overcome these immense disadvantages. His most remarkable gift is an almost supernatural sense of balance and feel for a machine. Even as a child, he could compensate for a bent, poorly aligned kart by instinctively leaning and adjusting his driving. This ability translates into a genius for finding the perfect racing line and extracting the maximum performance from any vehicle. He is also exceptionally adaptable, learning to drive a formula car from a complete standstill and quickly becoming one of the fastest students at the racing school. Furthermore, his battling spirit is a core strength; he is known for his never-say-die attitude, pushing through pain and adversity in a way that captivates onlookers and unnerves his rivals, who are often in far superior machinery.
