Description
Ayane is a central supporting character in the narrative of Nagasarete Airantou, known for her determined yet often unsuccessful rivalry with the main heroine, Suzu. Despite her youthful and somewhat immature demeanor, she is sixteen years old, which is a source of frustration for her as she is self-conscious about her underdeveloped figure compared to others her age. This insecurity contributes to a prominent trait known as A-Cup Angst, where she harbors jealousy over Suzu's more developed physique. Ayane serves as a miko, or shrine maiden, at the local shrine, a role she shares with her older sister, Machi, and their mother, Chizuru.
Ayane's personality is a blend of spirited ambition and comedic misfortune, often positioning her as the story's primary source of slapstick failure. She is a classic Butt Monkey, frequently suffering from physical mishaps, bad luck, and being stepped on, to the point where she has developed a high tolerance for pain and injury. Her schemes are characteristically transparent, as she has a habit of voicing her secret plans aloud, inadvertently ensuring that others are aware of her intentions and can easily thwart them. This tendency, combined with her persistent failures, makes her a comic figure who is perpetually trying but rarely succeeding.
Her primary motivation shifts from a general rivalry with Suzu to a specific romantic pursuit of the male protagonist, Ikuto. Initially, her interest in him is more superficial, but it deepens into genuine love as the story progresses. This evolution transforms her into a Clingy Jealous Girl, leading her to constantly follow Ikuto and engage in schemes designed to capture his affection and, more often than not, to one-up Suzu. Her role in the story is largely defined by these failed romantic pursuits and her interactions with the other girls vying for Ikuto's attention.
Key relationships heavily define Ayane's actions and development. Her relationship with Suzu is that of an inferior rival; she is consistently outmatched by Suzu's natural abilities, which fuels her feelings of being the "Always Someone Better". She also lives in the shadow of her older sister, Machi, whom she fears greatly, further cementing her role as the less capable sibling. Her bond with Ikuto is the primary driver of her antics, as she constantly devises plans to win him over, though these almost always end in failure. Despite her tough exterior, she shows resilience and a peculiar acceptance of her unfortunate fate.
Regarding her abilities, Ayane is not without skills, though they are often used for her comedic schemes. Her main weapon of choice is a set of anesthetic darts, which she uses in attempts to subdue targets, most notably Ikuto. For transportation across the island, she frequently rides a giant ostrich named Monjiro. While her plans typically fail in serious matters like romance, she has proven to be surprisingly competent at pranks, even outdoing a tanuki prankster spirit named Genjuumaru. Her physical durability is also notable, as she frequently endures significant impacts, such as falling from great heights, with little to no lasting harm.
