Description
Chikage is a prominent supporting character from the anime Nagasarete Airantou, known for her intellectual curiosity and her often misguided attempts to understand the world beyond her island home. She presents a dual nature to those around her. At first glance, she appears calm, refined, and well-behaved, with a bookish demeanor enhanced by her round-framed glasses. However, this exterior hides a deeply mischievous and obsessive personality driven by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. She is willing to employ traps, gadgets, and secrecy to conduct her "research," which often leads to chaotic situations.

Chikage lives in the only Western-style mansion on Airantou, a home she shares with her elephant maid, Panako. Her primary motivation is a fascination with the outside world, fueled by items that drift ashore from the modern era. She has amassed a large collection of these objects, which she keeps in her basement, though most are non-functional on the island. Her ultimate goal is to acquire the ultimate specimen for her collection: Ikuto, the first male to arrive on the island in years. She sees him as an invaluable source of information, wanting to examine a real male and learn everything she can about the world beyond the sea.

In her pursuit of Ikuto, Chikage frequently employs bizarre and misguided tactics. She has a habit of reading mature magazines that wash up on the beach and uses the ideas she gleans from them to try and seduce Ikuto, often with disastrous or humorous results. She also enjoys dressing herself and the other girls in clothing from the outside world, sometimes misinterpreting the intended purpose of specific outfits for her own amusement or for the sake of "research". Her abilities as a scientist, however, are questionable, as her strange experiments and assumptions frequently backfire, showcasing a gap between her theoretical knowledge and its practical application. In one notable instance, she briefly gains access to magic and uses it to cause havoc across the island until an angry Panako puts a stop to it.

Physically, Chikage is one of the weaker characters in the main cast, possessing little stamina or strength compared to the other girls, as she prefers reading over physical activity. She has, however, received some ninja training, which has slightly enhanced her abilities in spying and tree climbing. She is also noted for her surprisingly advanced tailoring skills, able to replicate clothing designs from magazines without instruction, and can undress and dress people with remarkable speed.

Chikage's key relationships are primarily defined by her role as a rival to the other girls for Ikuto's attention, though she often uses brains over brawn. Her closest companion is Panako, her elephant maid, who often acts as a caretaker and a check on Chikage's wilder experiments. She is also revealed to be cousins with several other island girls, including Yukino, Kunai, Shinobu, and Mikoto, which explains her occasional appearance in a shinobi outfit. Her fascination with a series of novels brought to the island by Ikuto adds another layer to her character, as she remains unaware that the author is her own father, Kiyomasa. Through her actions, Chikage serves as a source of both comedic relief and conflict, her relentless scientific curiosity driving many of the series' misadventures. Her development is seen in small moments of consideration for others, even as she remains primarily focused on her next experiment or discovery.
