Description
Mei Mei is an outsider who has drifted onto the island of Airantou, arriving around the same time as the protagonist, Ikuto. Her background is rooted in a family of Chinese traveling performers, and she is accompanied by Tohno, a kappa she befriended during her travels in Japan.
In terms of her personality, Mei Mei is defined by her chronic shyness and nervous disposition, particularly when interacting with strangers. This deep-seated timidity has historically caused her to make mistakes during stage performances, leading to a notable lack of self-confidence. Because of this, she initially has great difficulty looking people in the eye and often retreats from social situations. However, through her interactions with the other inhabitants of the island, she gradually becomes more socially adept and confident, though she still has a long way to go to be considered entirely at ease in social settings. Beneath her shy exterior, she is a kind girl. A key aspect of her character is her hobby of reading romantic love dramas, which grants her a knowledge of mature concepts that sets her apart from many of the island's other girls and leads to her having a surprisingly active, if internal, imagination regarding such matters.
Mei Mei's primary motivation is to overcome her social anxiety and find a place for herself. Her journey to the island was part of a personal quest for self-improvement after failing to connect with audiences in her family's circus. Once on Airantou, she seeks to adapt to her new home and interact more comfortably with others. Her role in the story is that of a fellow newcomer to the island, and her struggles with shyness often serve as a focal point for episodes dedicated to her personal growth and integration into the community.
Her most significant relationship is with Tohno, the kappa who is her constant companion and closest friend, having accompanied her on her journey since they met while she was traveling. She also develops a close friendship with the main characters, Ikuto and Suzu. It is Suzu and Ikuto who discover her after she arrives and who actively work to make her feel welcome, helping her find a home and encouraging her to come out of her shell. Over time, she develops romantic feelings for Ikuto, which, combined with her reading habits, lead her to have strange fantasies about him.
Throughout the series, Mei Mei undergoes noticeable development. She begins as a nearly reclusive figure who can barely speak to others, but through the patience and kindness of the island's residents, she becomes markedly more social and self-assured. While her inherent shyness never fully disappears, she learns to interact with others more directly and promises to do better, showing a clear trajectory of personal growth.
Mei Mei possesses several notable abilities stemming from her upbringing. As a member of a family of traveling performers, she is extremely flexible and acrobatic, capable of folding her body in exaggerated ways and performing stage tricks like juggling. Her agility also makes her very adept at fleeing or hiding quickly. She is also quite intelligent, as demonstrated by her ability to achieve perfect scores on academic subjects during a school exam. Furthermore, she has a unique talent for crafting highly realistic animal costumes, as well as costumes that allow her to blend into environments, such as trees or rocks. This skill often serves as both a coping mechanism for her shyness and a practical tool.
