Description
Gaito is the primary antagonist for the first story arc, a figure of significant power and tragedy whose actions drive much of the conflict. He is a prince of the ancient Panthalassa tribe and the older twin brother of Kaito. Gaito was forced to live a life of solitude from infancy at the bottom of the ocean, a consequence of a curse placed upon his people by the sea goddess Aqua Regina. While his brother Kaito was sent to live on the surface, Gaito was left alone in the deep, a fate that instilled in him a deep and abiding loneliness.
Physically, Gaito is a young man who bears a striking resemblance to his twin, with spiky grey hair and pink eyes. He is most often depicted in regal attire, wearing a dark, loose-fitting black robe and dark trousers, and he is frequently seen holding a red rose or a glass of wine, even while submerged in his underwater domain. His palace, a luxurious yet oppressive place, serves as his base of operations where he commands his forces.
His personality is characterized by a cold, cruel, and impatient nature, especially when his subordinates fail him. He is self-obsessed and wields his power with a sense of entitlement, ordering his minions to do his bidding. However, this hard exterior masks a vulnerable core driven by intense loneliness and a desperate need for connection. This contradiction is most evident in his relationship with Sara, the former mermaid princess of the Indian Ocean. He fell deeply in love with her, believing she understood his profound isolation. His love for Sara is the primary motivation behind his malevolent plans; the destruction of the human and mermaid worlds was originally her request, and he dedicates himself to fulfilling her desires.
Gaito's primary role in the story is as the leader of the Dark Lovers and the mastermind behind a scheme to capture all seven mermaid princesses. He seeks to imprison them and take their pearls, which are necessary to summon Aqua Regina. He believes that with the goddess's power, he can conquer the world as a form of revenge for his people's curse and to give Sara what she wants. A crucial part of his plan also involves reuniting with his twin brother, Kaito. He believes that by combining their powers, they would have the strength to achieve their goals, viewing Kaito as his other half.
His key relationships are complex and possessive. Beyond his obsessive love for Sara, he has a manipulative dynamic with his four female servants, the Dark Lovers: Izuru, Eriru, Yuri, and Maria. They are utterly devoted to him, having been created from sea creatures he transformed, and they constantly compete for his affection, but he largely treats them as disposable tools for his ambition. His relationship with his brother Kaito is the central familial conflict; he seeks to capture Kaito not out of brotherly love, but as a means to an end for their combined power.
Gaito's character undergoes a significant development towards the end of the first season. When Sara has a change of heart and abandons his cause, he experiences a severe Villainous Breakdown, becoming even more desperate and cruel. However, his love for her ultimately redeems him. In the climax, he accepts that Sara does not want the world destroyed and chooses to remain with her. In the final moments, as his power fades and his castle begins to sink into the abyss, Sara chooses to stay by his side so he will not have to be alone again. They meet their end together as the palace collapses, with his death serving as a final act of redemption through love.
As a member of the Panthalassa tribe, Gaito possesses formidable supernatural abilities, primarily the power of darkness. He is shown to be immune to the hypnotic singing of the mermaid princesses, making him a uniquely dangerous foe. He commands complete control over his Dark Lovers and other minions, and he can trap his enemies in illusionary worlds. He is often seen wielding a staff, and he has the ability to create objects from nothing, such as the pink crystal roses he is so fond of. His main power, however, was his connection to the darkness and the immense destructive potential he could unleash, especially when combined with his brother's power.
