Description
Mayu Kanzaki is a supporting character in Lovely Complex and the ex-girlfriend of Atsushi Otani. She and Otani began dating during middle school, where she served as the manager for the school basketball team. Her physical appearance is characterized by short gray hair and blue eyes, and she stands at 142 centimeters tall. She bears a striking resemblance to Chiharu Tanaka, a similarity that plays a significant role in Otani's initial attraction to Chiharu after Mayu and Otani's relationship ended.

In terms of personality, Mayu is described as having a sweet and gentle demeanor. She is calm and appears approachable, though her actions reveal a capacity for making difficult personal decisions. Her primary motivation stems from her romantic feelings: during middle school, she fell in love with someone else who was very tall, leading her to break up with Otani and leave him deeply heartbroken. This decision directly contributes to Otani's lasting insecurity about his height, a central theme in the series. After middle school, she attends Sakura Girls' High School, a prestigious institution. In the spin-off story Love Com Plus, it is revealed that she has an older brother, who was the basketball club captain during middle school and looks very different from her.

Her role in the story is that of a catalyst rather than an active participant in the main events. She does not regularly appear alongside the main cast but her past relationship with Otani is a key element of his backstory. Her breakup with him is the direct cause of the deep-seated height complex that Otani carries with him into high school, and her physical resemblance to Chiharu is the reason Otani initially develops a crush on Chiharu. This sets up one of the early romantic subplots in the series. Mayu's key relationship is with Otani, which exists entirely in the past. The relationship ended, but its emotional impact on Otani lingers and influences his interactions with Risa Koizumi and Chiharu. Her character does not undergo significant development within the main narrative, as she appears only briefly. Her notable ability is her influence on the plot simply through her existence and past decisions, making her a meaningful supporting figure whose actions help shape the emotional landscape of the protagonists.
