Description
Hayato Gokudera is a central character born in Italy with a mixed heritage of three-quarters Italian and one-quarter Japanese. As a teenager, he stands at 168 centimeters tall with silver hair and green eyes, and often carries himself with the air of a rebellious delinquent. His early life was marked by tragedy and complexity. He was the son of a mafia boss and a woman with whom his father had an affair, making him an illegitimate child in the eyes of the mafia. His mother, a talented pianist, was largely forbidden from seeing him and died in a car accident under mysterious circumstances when he was young. Upon discovering the truth about his birth and his mother's death at the age of eight, Gokudera ran away from home.

Despite a privileged upbringing, Gokudera's childhood was traumatic. His half-sister, Bianchi, would frequently feed him her poisonous cooking, which caused him to fall severely ill whenever he sees her face, a condition that only subsides when she covers her eyes. Before turning to a life of crime, Gokudera was a gifted pianist, an instrument he learned to play from his mother. He abandoned the piano due to his traumatic experiences and decided to join the mafia, partly seeking revenge on his father. He struggled to find a family willing to accept him due to his mixed-race heritage, until he sought out Dr. Shamal, a family doctor who taught him how to use dynamite as his primary weapon.

In terms of personality, Gokudera presents a volatile and hot-tempered exterior, cultivating a "bad boy" image at school that makes him popular among many female students. He is often irritable and hostile toward others, yet he possesses a genius-level intellect and consistently achieves perfect scores on his exams, a sharp contrast to his rebellious behavior. His primary driving motivation is his unwavering loyalty and devotion to Tsuna Sawada. After Tsuna inadvertently saved him from his own explosives, Gokudera swore fealty to him, declaring himself Tsuna's right-hand man and referring to him only as the Tenth. He idolizes Tsuna to an extreme degree and has difficulty showing his true feelings to anyone else. Gokudera also maintains a fascination with cryptozoology, believing in unidentified mysterious animals.

Gokudera's role in the story is defined by his position as the Storm Guardian of the Vongola Family, a role signified by his possession of the Vongola Storm Ring. He is fiercely protective of Tsuna and often acts as the first line of defense, though his rash nature can sometimes lead him into trouble. His key relationships include his mentor, Dr. Shamal, from whom he learned his explosive techniques. His relationship with his half-sister Bianchi is strained due to his physical illness triggered by her presence, though she often attempts to help him. Over time, he develops a begrudging camaraderie with his fellow guardians, such as Takeshi Yamamoto, who initially acts as a rival for the position of Tsuna's right-hand man.

Throughout the series, Gokudera undergoes significant development. He starts as a solitary and reckless fighter but gradually learns to trust and cooperate with his allies. His abilities evolve dramatically from simply throwing sticks of dynamite to mastering complex combat systems. His initial weakness is the difficulty of calculating distances and timing for his explosives. He overcomes this by creating Rocket Bombs, which propel themselves toward their target.

In the future arc, Gokudera's growth is showcased through his development of the Sistema C.A.I., which stands for Cambio Arma Istantaneo. This system allows him to utilize multiple Dying Will Flames, including Storm, Rain, Lightning, Cloud, and Sun, through a series of box weapons. The Storm Flame is his primary attribute, which has the power of disintegration. His box animal is a wild cat named Uri, who can transform into a massive leopard when infused with Sun Flames, and later takes the form of a crossbow-like weapon called G. Archery when combined with his Vongola Box. This progression from a lone bomber to a strategic fighter capable of wielding multiple flame types marks his maturation into a reliable guardian and the capable right-hand man he always aspired to be.
