Description
Ken Joushima is a character from the Kokuyo Junior High Gang, a group of formidable students led by the powerful illusionist Mukuro Rokudo. Originally from Italy, Ken was born into the Estraneo Famiglia, a mafia family that conducted cruel experiments on its own children. As a guinea pig, he endured horrific procedures alongside his two closest companions, Mukuro and Chikusa Kakimoto. After Mukuro annihilated the Estraneo Famiglia and freed them, Ken became one of his most loyal and trusted subordinates, following him to Japan and participating in his plan to usurp the Vongola Famiglia's heir, Tsunayoshi Sawada.
In terms of appearance, Ken is a young man of average height with wild, unkempt hair. His most distinguishing feature is a large, horizontal scar that stretches from one cheek to the other, crossing the bridge of his nose, giving him a fierce and intimidating look. He is almost always seen wearing his green Kokuyo Junior High uniform, and he possesses sharp canine teeth that are visible even when he is not using his primary ability. This ability, known as the Animal Channel, allows him to insert different animal teeth cartridges over his own, which then modify his physiology to grant him the traits of the chosen creature, such as the fangs of a wolf, the speed of a cheetah, or the strength of a gorilla. When he activates a cartridge, a small image of the animal's face appears on his cheek.
Ken's personality is loud, eccentric, and aggressively overconfident. He has a short temper and a habit of teasing and belittling others, often speaking out of turn or making mocking comments. A notable verbal quirk is his habit of ending his sentences with a unique sound or speaking with a slight lisp due to his prominent fangs. He loves to fight and is always eager to prove his strength. This brash and noisy nature directly clashes with the calm and grounded personality of his childhood friend, Chikusa, leading them to bicker constantly. Ken enjoys pulling small pranks, even on Mukuro, such as wearing his jacket or eating his food, though these actions usually result in swift and unpleasant punishment via Mukuro's illusory powers. Despite his rough exterior, Ken demonstrates deep, unwavering loyalty to Mukuro. He owes his freedom and perhaps his life to him, and as such, he follows every order without hesitation, willing to sacrifice himself if necessary. He looks up to Mukuro as his savior and the person who gave him a purpose.
Ken's role in the story is primarily as an antagonist during the Kokuyo Arc, where he serves as one of Mukuro's front-line fighters. He engages in battles against members of Tsuna's family, showing off his ferocious and unpredictable fighting style. After his defeat and subsequent arrest by the Vindice prison guards, he remains a recurring ally. He is later freed through Mukuro's machinations and comes to accept Tsuna as his new boss, fighting alongside the Vongola in the future conflict against the Millefiore Famiglia. Throughout these later arcs, his role shifts from a pure enemy to a rough-around-the-edges comrade.
His key relationships define much of his character. With Chikusa Kakimoto, he shares a brother-like bond built on a lifetime of shared trauma. They are inseparable partners who trust each other completely, but their constant bickering and opposite personalities provide much of their dynamic. Ken often calls Chikusa by a teasing nickname and gets annoyed by his habit of pointing out Ken's true feelings. With Mukuro Rokudo, Ken's dynamic is one of absolute fealty. He refers to him with great respect and would do anything for him, even while attempting to get away with childish pranks. He serves as a devoted soldier and considers himself a vital tool for Mukuro's goals.
One of the most significant aspects of Ken's development is his relationship with Chrome Dokuro, a girl who becomes Mukuro's vessel and a Mist Guardian for the Vongola. Initially, Ken treats Chrome with harsh mockery, calling her names and pretending to dislike her. He only sees her as a container for Mukuro. However, over time, he grows to genuinely care for her well-being. He constantly worries about her safety and happiness, a fact he vehemently denies whenever Chikusa points it out. He shows his concern through actions, such as going out of his way to buy snacks he thinks will make her happy or becoming protective and angry at anyone who upsets her. This softer, caring side is a stark contrast to his usual ferocious demeanor, demonstrating a capacity for genuine connection beyond his loyalty to Mukuro. His development shows a subtle shift from being merely a wild, animalistic fighter to a more rounded individual who cares for his found family, even if he would never admit it aloud.
