TV-Series
Description
Ennis is a homunculus, an artificial life form created through alchemy by the immortal alchemist Szilard Quates. Her physical appearance is that of a young woman with short, spiky red hair and red eyes. She typically wears a black business suit, though her style softens in later years, such as during her honeymoon in the 2000s when she wears a sleeveless black dress with a thin gold choker and her hair is smoother. It is believed her appearance is based on the genetic material of a woman Szilard kidnapped to serve as her biological template.
Created as a blank slate with no inherent thoughts or emotions, Ennis is born into existence solely as a tool for her master. Her emotional and moral awakening begins after she devours an alchemist on Szilard's orders. By absorbing the alchemist's memories and feelings, she gains the concepts of humanity, sin, and morality. This newfound awareness brings with it a heavy burden of guilt for her past actions, yet she continues to serve Szilard out of a deep-seated fear of death and the belief that rebellion is futile, as Szilard can end her existence at any moment.
Ennis is acutely aware of her own purpose as a weapon and a tool, and she envies those who can complain about the meaninglessness of their lives, as her own purpose is painfully clear. Her demeanor is quiet, withdrawn, and formal. She speaks only when necessary and savors moments of silence, as they are the only times she is free from following orders. She is highly skilled at suppressing her feelings while in Szilard's presence, focusing entirely on the task at hand with a rational and observant mind.
The most significant change in Ennis's life comes through her encounters with the kind-hearted thieves Isaac Dian and Miria Harvent. Their unconditional kindness and encouragement lead her to genuinely smile and cry for the first time. More importantly, they inspire her to commit her first act of true rebellion: betraying Szilard. She knowingly sacrifices herself to protect Isaac and Miria from him, an act that ultimately leads to Szilard's death at the hands of Firo Prochainezo. After Szilard is devoured by Firo, Ennis becomes a part of him for a time before he restores her to independent existence. She then moves into Firo's apartment.
Following her liberation, Ennis continues her emotional development. She is fiercely loyal to her friends and, by 1933, exhibits anger and a desire for justice when they are harmed. However, she struggles with emotional nuance, particularly in recognizing romantic feelings, initially viewing her relationship with Firo as sibling-like. Over time, this relationship deepens, and she eventually marries Firo in the early 1980s, taking his surname. Around a year after Szilard's death, based on a misunderstanding of a letter she wrote, Isaac and Miria present her with the child-like immortal Czeslaw Meyer as a "younger brother," a role she accepts.
As a homunculus created using Szilard's immortal cells, Ennis is an immortal being who does not age and possesses regenerative abilities. She can also absorb other immortals to gain their memories and knowledge. Her combat skills are formidable; she is an expert hand-to-hand fighter and knife wielder, capable of easily subduing multiple armed opponents. She has a telepathic connection with her creator, Szilard, who also has the power to end her life by severing the connection between his cells and her own. After Szilard's death, this weakness is removed. Her mind contains vast knowledge transferred directly from Szilard, including detailed maps of Manhattan, which she can recall with perfect clarity to navigate efficiently.
