Description
Firo Prochainezo is a central figure in the criminal underworld of 1930s New York, known as one of the youngest and most promising members of the Martillo Family, a Camorra syndicate. Orphaned at the age of ten after his mother died of tuberculosis and his father, rumored to be a Camorrist, passed away from lung cancer before he was born, Firo was taken in by the Martillo Family after a failed attempt to rob the Don. This act of mercy forged an unbreakable bond of loyalty, and he considers the entire Martillo organization to be his surrogate family.
Physically, Firo is a young man of below-average height, standing at 169 centimeters, with brown hair and brown or amber eyes. He possesses a notable contradiction in his appearance: a youthful, almost babyish face that makes him appear several years younger than his actual age, which is a source of great personal sensitivity. To offset this and appear older and more intellectual, he began wearing glasses when he assumed the role of the family's bookkeeper in later years. His typical attire consists of a green suit worn without a tie, with his shirt often left partially unbuttoned.
Firo's personality is a blend of surprising friendliness and extreme brutality. For a member of organized crime, he is genuinely affable, possessing a bold, curious, and even compassionate nature. He does not actively seek out trouble, but his meddlesome nature means he will almost always investigate anything happening around him, often inserting himself into situations that originally had nothing to do with him. This curiosity and willingness to take risks have been with him since before he became immortal, guiding his decision to join the Camorra without hesitation.
Despite this approachable side, Firo is incredibly quick to violence when he or his friends are threatened. He is described as having no restraint, often lashing out with brutal force against anyone who wrongs him, frequently beating opponents unconscious. This impulsive aggression is balanced by a genuine aversion to harming those he loves, even in minor ways, and he maintains a chivalrous code that forbids him from ever striking a woman, viewing any man who does so as worthless. He holds no grand illusions about his own intelligence, frequently describing himself as slow or stupid. While he gained a vast repository of knowledge and experience after devouring the immortal Szilard Quates, he claims he cannot fully comprehend or utilize it, though this does little to dampen his naturally confident and occasionally cocky demeanor.
Firo's romantic and social life is marked by a deep-seated shyness, particularly regarding women and intimate contact. This stems from a traumatic childhood incident where his delicate features led to him being mistaken for a girl and nearly assaulted. As a result, he becomes extremely defensive whenever his masculinity or youthful appearance is called into question. This history also makes him notably timid around women he finds attractive, despite harboring chivalrous feelings toward them. This is most evident in his relationship with Ennis, a homunculus he met just before becoming immortal. Although he fell in love with her almost immediately, he was initially too shy to express his feelings and was depressed when she regarded him platonically.
As a key protagonist of the 1930 arc, Firo's role in the story is defined by his ascension within the Martillo Family and his accidental attainment of immortality. During a celebration for his promotion to executive, he unknowingly served the Grand Panacea, an elixir of immortality, to the entire gathering, mistaking it for wine. This event made him and several others immortal. The night was crashed by the ancient alchemist Szilard Quates, who sought to devour every immortal to gain their knowledge. In a climactic confrontation, Firo devoured Szilard instead, absorbing the old man's knowledge, memories, and power, and simultaneously freeing Ennis from his control.
His development continues across decades. In 1934, he was manipulated into being incarcerated in Alcatraz prison, where he reunited with his friend Isaac Dian. Later, in the 1970s, when his mentor Maiza Avaro left the family, Firo stepped into the role of the Martillo Family's bookkeeper. After roughly seventy years of a progressively deepening relationship, he eventually married Ennis, finally taking their honeymoon in 2002. Despite gaining unimaginable knowledge and power from devouring Szilard, Firo's primary motivation remains the preservation of his peaceful world and his surrogate family. He is haunted by the fear that he might one day become as cruel and sadistic as the man he consumed, a fear that is alleviated when he finds he takes no pleasure in harming his friends.
Firo's key relationships define his life. Maiza Avaro is his closest mentor and confidant within the Martillo Family, often seen as a surrogate older brother who bought him his iconic hat and who helps him navigate the psychological burdens of immortality. Ronny Schiatto is his teacher in knife combat, and Firo remains fiercely loyal to him despite being unaware of Ronny's true, demonic nature. He maintains a strong childhood friendship with the Gandor brothers and the eccentric assassin Claire Stanfield, alliances that keep the Martillo and Gandor families on friendly terms. The bumbling and kind-hearted thieves Isaac Dian and Miria Harvent are also close friends; their genuine goodness provides a moral compass and helps reassure Firo about his own humanity.
In terms of abilities, Firo is a highly skilled combatant even before gaining immortality. He is trained in the use of a knife, a skill taught to him by Ronny Schiatto, and is also proficient in a form of grappling or擒拿术 (qín ná shù) taught by another associate named Yaguruma. He was originally tasked with monitoring the family's casinos for cheaters, and his sharp eyes and quick hands from his days as a pickpocket serve him well. As an immortal who consumed the complete elixir, Firo cannot die from any conventional means. He is immune to aging and his wounds heal at an accelerated rate. The only way to permanently kill him is for another complete immortal to place their right hand on his head and recite a specific incantation to devour him. His most unique ability, however, is the accumulated knowledge of Szilard Quates, which includes the secret formula for creating the immortality elixir as well as the experiences of all of Szilard's previous victims.
