Description
Czeslaw Mayer appears to be a young boy around ten years old, with dark brown hair, but this youthful form belies his true age of several centuries. He became immortal in the year 1711 after drinking the Grand Panacea, an elixir that halted his physical aging entirely. As a result, he possesses an ageless body that can recover from any wound, no matter how severe. Injuries such as cuts, gunshots, or even decapitation will heal as his blood and flesh forcibly return to his body. The only known way for him to be permanently killed is to be devoured by another immortal using their right hand.

Before he was tortured by his guardian, Lebreau Fermet Viralesque, Czeslaw was described as a gentle, innocent, and somewhat shy child who trusted others easily. However, Fermet subjected him to centuries of brutal experimentation under the guise of testing the limits of immortality, which transformed him completely. This trauma left him with extreme paranoia and a deep-seated terror of other immortals, as he lives in constant fear of being devoured by them. To protect himself, Czeslaw adopted a cunning and manipulative personality. He uses his innocent appearance as a mask, pretending to be a kind and polite child while secretly scheming and viewing everyone with suspicion. He is capable of sacrificing others without hesitation if it means ensuring his own survival, though this cruelty stems from a deeply traumatized psyche rather than inherent malice.

Czeslaw’s primary motivation for much of his long life was preemptive self-preservation. Convinced that there is no love in the world and that all immortals are threats, he decided to hunt down and devour his fellow alchemists before they could do the same to him. His storyline intersects significantly with the Flying Pussyfoot incident in 1931. He boards the train with the intention of meeting and devouring the alchemist Maiza Avaro, as well as selling explosives to the Runorata family. It is during this chaotic train ride that his worldview begins to change. After encountering the eccentric and genuinely trusting immortals Isaac Dian and Miria Harvent, Czeslaw experiences kindness without ulterior motives for perhaps the first time since his childhood. When he finally meets Maiza on the platform, he is met not with violence but with unconditional forgiveness. Following this, he is taken in by Ennis, who becomes like an older sister to him, and he finds a new home within the Martillo family.

The most significant relationship in his past is with his former guardian, Fermet, whose sadistic torture instilled in Czeslaw a lasting psychological wound. Czeslaw eventually ended this torture by devouring Fermet, but this act only deepened his trauma by forcing him to experience the genuine joy Fermet felt while inflicting pain. In contrast, his relationship with Maiza Avaro represents a turning point. Maiza had always shown concern for the boy, and his decision to forgive Czeslaw rather than fight him breaks the cycle of paranoia. Isaac and Miria serve as catalysts for this change, as their simple trust confounds his expectations and proves that not everyone is deceptive. Finally, his bond with Ennis provides him with a stable family structure. She acts as his guardian and older sibling, allowing him to live a relatively normal life in New York.

In terms of development, Czeslaw transitions from a state of total isolation and paranoia to one of tentative trust and stability. He learns to lower his defenses and allows himself to be vulnerable, though he still struggles with the habits he developed over centuries of fear. His emotional state remains somewhat aligned with his physical age; despite possessing the knowledge and thought patterns of an adult, his emotional reactions to stress are often impulsive and childlike, causing him to scream or flee when frightened. Beyond his immortality, Czeslaw possesses notable abilities in alchemy. He is skilled enough to manufacture explosives, creating the bombs that play a key role in the 1931 train incident. He is also highly intelligent and adept at psychological manipulation, skills he developed out of necessity to survive as a seemingly helpless child in a dangerous world.
