Description
Jun Ushiro is a central figure in the narrative, a thirteen-year-old boy with a volatile and deeply troubled nature. Physically, he is depicted with shaggy brown hair and dark blue eyes, often hidden behind rectangular-lensed glasses that contribute to his somewhat detached appearance. His height is around 150 to 159 centimeters, and he carries himself with a demeanor that suggests a simmering anger barely held in check.

His personality is dominated by an extremely short fuse, and when upset, his first and most troubling reaction is to physically lash out at his younger foster sister, Kana. This abusive behavior stems from a profound and misplaced resentment; he believes that his mother died giving birth to Kana, making the innocent girl the target for all his internalized rage and grief. He is generally aloof, quiet, and displays little interest in the emotions or plights of others, often speaking in a cool or dismissive manner that makes him seem lacking in humanity. Despite this harsh exterior, he is also intensely observant, paying close attention to details about the people around him that others might miss.

Jun's motivations are complex and evolve over the course of the story. Initially, his primary driver is his undirected anger, which he regularly takes out on Kana. He is also motivated by a desire for self-preservation; in the manga, it is revealed that he avoided signing the pilot's contract from the start, leaving that terrible burden to his sister instead. However, as he witnesses the successive deaths of his companions, including his best friend Kanji and his biological mother Misumi Tanaka, a change begins to take root. He is deeply affected by the guilt of his treatment of Kana and the loss of those around him. This ultimately leads him to formally enter the contract himself, no longer wishing to stand by as an observer or let an "outsider" face the final battle in his place.

His role in the group is initially that of an outsider and a source of conflict, largely due to his treatment of Kana, which earns him the contempt of other pilots like Maki. He maintains a significant friendship with Kanji Yoshikawa, a bond forged from their first year of school as they connected over the shared absence of a mother. Kanji is one of the few people aware of Kana's request not to interfere in Jun's abuse, and Jun later admits to him that his reason for staying with the group was not solely due to obligation. His relationship with Kana is the most pivotal; his hatred slowly transforms into a deep, protective care as he resolves to fight so that she might live on. He also develops a connection with Yōko Machi. While Machi initially despises him for his abusiveness, she later comes to understand him and harbors romantic feelings. Though Jun rarely expresses similar affection openly, he is visibly saddened by her death, which pushes him to take her place as the final pilot.

Jun's character development is significant, transforming him from a bitter, abusive boy into a figure of tragic resolve. In the manga, this journey culminates in his final battle, which becomes a moral nightmare. After defeating the enemy robot, the opposing pilots escape and hide among the civilian population of their planet. Faced with a forty-eight-hour time limit and no other way to secure a victory, Jun is forced into the horrific choice of annihilating the entire planet's population. He carries out this genocide, enduring immense psychological trauma and vomiting from the horror of his actions, before dying alone. In the anime, his fate takes a different turn; after outmaneuvering the being Koyemshi, he demands to become the final pilot to destroy the robot Zearth itself. He then endures a thirty-hour battle, ultimately defeating the enemy and dying peacefully, with the hope of being reunited with his mother. Aside from his keen observational skills, Jun possesses no supernatural abilities, making his psychological endurance and strategic thinking his primary strengths in the face of overwhelming horror.
