Description
Elise von Dietrich is a fictional character from the anime series Sky Girls. She is a 15-year-old girl of German nationality who becomes the fourth pilot to join the elite Sonic Diver unit. Elise is notably young in appearance, often looking younger than her age, with a small stature of 150 centimeters, blue eyes, and long blonde hair. Her upbringing was unusual, as she was an orphan who grew up in a Western European military base. Both of her parents were military personnel, and after their deaths, the base and its personnel became her surrogate family. This environment contributed to her being a prodigy; she is fluent in six languages, including German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese. Before being formally recruited into the Japanese training camp, she was already recognized as a genius pilot and was the first person in Japan to pilot a Sonic Diver, specifically her unit, the Bachstelze V-1. Her machine is a European-made, completed model, which offers high versatility and performance compared to the other pilots' units.

Elise's entry into the main story is precipitated by tragedy. When the alien mechanized lifeforms known as WORMs attacked her home base in Western Europe, the facility was completely destroyed. Elise was among the sole survivors, forced to evacuate and witness the annihilation of everyone she considered family. This traumatic event deeply scars her psyche. When she is subsequently sent to Japan to join the Sonic Diver team, she projects a hardened exterior to cope with her grief and isolation. Her personality is initially marked by a prickly and confrontational demeanor. She is impulsive, blunt, and speaks her mind without hesitation, which immediately puts her at odds with the team's disciplined leader, Eika Ichijo. This behavior stems from her belief that she has lost everyone and can no longer rely on anyone but herself; her abrasive attitude serves as a form of self-protection to keep others at a distance and to assert her own competence. She harbors a fierce and undisguised hatred for the WORMs, the entities that destroyed her home.

Nevertheless, her initial bravado masks a more vulnerable and childlike nature. In a direct challenge to Eika’s authority, Elise demands a duel. After losing this confrontation, she begrudgingly accepts Eika's leadership, showing a grudging respect for strength. This moment marks a turning point, as her tough exterior begins to soften, especially with the patience and kindness shown by the more gentle-natured pilot, Otoha Sakurano. Her primary role in the story is as the fourth and final member of the core Sky Girls team, adding another powerful and skilled pilot to the roster. Despite her initial friction with the group, she is a valuable asset to the team and her technical skill is undeniable, making her a key operational pilot in the fight against the resurrected WORM threat.

Key relationships define her development. Her rivalry with Eika eventually transforms into a deep mutual trust and effective teamwork, culminating in a complete reconciliation during a mission on a deserted island where they successfully cooperate to defeat a WORM. She also forms a bond with the support crew, particularly with an older chef who dotes on her because she reminds him of a granddaughter he lost in a previous war. This relationship provides her with a surrogate family dynamic she had been missing. Over time, her immature and combative personality matures significantly, and she loses much of her earlier defensive hostility, integrating fully into the unit. As a pilot, Elise is exceptionally talented, an ace of the German Air Force whose flying skills are comparable to, if not exceeding, those of the team leader. Her Bachstelze V-1 is equipped with the close-combat MV Lance and beam cannons, and she possesses powerful assault capabilities. Her abilities are not just in piloting, but also in her vast intellect and multilingual communication skills, which allow her to integrate with the international task force without any language barriers.
