Description
Akane Miura is a character from the anime Rocket Girls. A Japanese high school student, she is initially introduced as a first-year student and an honor student at the Nellis Girls Academy, where she is a member of the biology club. Physically, she is depicted as slight and small in stature, standing 153 centimeters tall, with black hair and gray eyes.
In terms of personality, Akane is predominantly quiet, reserved, and shy. She is well-behaved and almost always very polite and formal with everyone she meets. Despite this gentle exterior, she possesses a remarkable inner determination. Once she sets her mind on a goal, she can become an unstoppable force, demonstrating significant chutzpah and a daring nature that contradicts her shy demeanor. For instance, she once went on a hunger strike to convince her parents to allow her to take a year off from school, and she spent her own savings to travel alone to the Solomon Islands to volunteer at the Solomon Space Association.
Akane's primary motivation is her desire to become an astronaut, an ambition sparked by her classmate Yukari Morita's achievements. She is deeply inspired by Yukari and looks up to her as a senior figure. This drive pushes her to leave the structured life of a perfect student behind to pursue a dangerous and demanding career in space. She also seems to have a deep regard for the scientific process and a strong sense of responsibility not to let the researchers down whose experiments she helps conduct.
Within the story of Rocket Girls, Akane serves as the mission specialist for the Solomon Space Association. While she is incredibly intelligent, a teen genius capable of performing complex calculations mentally and possessing deep knowledge in fields like biology, she has a critical physical limitation: a low tolerance for acceleration stress, often passing out when subjected to 4 Gs or more. This initially leads to her being rejected as a pilot candidate. However, her vast knowledge, quick thinking, and extremely light weight make her perfectly suited to be the brains of the operation, performing the scientific and technical tasks that the other pilots, Yukari and Matsuri, are less equipped to handle. The SSA also hoped that her mild personality would help moderate the more passionate and strong-willed natures of her fellow astronauts, thereby improving mission safety and performance.
Her key relationships are primarily with her fellow astronauts. She regards Yukari Morita as her senpai and strives never to fail her, with some sources suggesting she may have a crush on Yukari. She acts as a diplomatic and calming presence between Yukari and the more brash Matsuri. Off the base, she misses her parents, from whom she is separated during her time at the SSA.
Throughout the series, Akane shows significant development. Despite fainting during launches and re-entries and facing life-threatening situations, such as during the mission to save the Orpheus probe where she nearly died, she consistently chooses to continue working as an astronaut. She evolves from a sheltered, rule-abiding honor student into a confident professional who is willing to improvise and take incredible risks in the vacuum of space, such as disconnecting her own oxygen supply to fit into a tight space and retrieve a loose part from a probe.
Akane's notable abilities lie almost entirely in her intellectual and technical prowess rather than physical strength. She is a trained mission specialist with multiple space flights under her belt, highly skilled in extravehicular activity, memorization, and improvisation. Her ability to remain calm and think scientifically under pressure makes her an indispensable asset, even if her body struggles with the physical rigors of a rocket launch.
