Description
Matsuri is a main character in Rocket Girls, a half-Japanese, half-Polynesian teenager who lives with a local tribe in the Solomon Islands. She is the daughter of a shaman and also the daughter of Hiroshi Morita, the missing father of the protagonist Yukari Morita, making her Yukari’s younger half-sister. After Yukari discovers her father’s tribe during a survival training exercise, Matsuri is quickly recruited by the Solomon Space Association as a backup astronaut because of her light weight and physical resilience.

Matsuri has an optimistic and naturally airheaded personality, often acting in a cheerful and slightly naive manner. She tends to refer to rockets as “fireworks,” which reflects her simple and enthusiastic worldview. Despite her bumbling exterior, she possesses sharp survival instincts and an animal-like intuition inherited from her shaman lineage. She is deeply loyal to her friends and uses her extensive knowledge of the jungle and local environment to support them in dangerous situations. Her physical fitness is the best among the three main astronauts; she has demonstrated the ability to withstand a high G‑load of up to 13 G without harm, and she even survives a re‑entry that would have been fatal to most people without sustaining serious injury. She is also depicted as the strongest member of the trio by a wide margin.

Matsuri’s motivations are initially tied to her family and her role in the tribe, but she quickly embraces her position as an astronaut with enthusiasm. She becomes a key part of the SSA’s operations, serving as the physical “brawn” alongside Yukari and Akane. Her relationship with Yukari is that of a younger sibling: she looks up to her half-sister and supports her unconditionally, while also bringing a light‑hearted energy to their interactions. She forms a close working bond with Akane as well, rounding out the team’s dynamic.

Over the course of the story, Matsuri grows from a simple island girl into a capable astronaut, learning to operate spacecraft and work within a formal organization while retaining her unique connection to nature and her tribe. Her notable abilities include charming fish to shore by singing, using an almost hypnotic influence on guards through her shamanistic presence, and an extraordinary tolerance for physical stress. Her favorite foods are notable for her habit of putting ketchup and mayonnaise on nearly everything, and she eats potato chips with chopsticks.
