Description
Poppu Harukaze, also known as Pop Harukaze, is the younger sister of the main heroine Doremi Harukaze in the anime Ojamajo Doremi #. She is four years younger than Doremi, born on September 9, and begins the story as a student at Sonatine Kindergarten before later attending Misora First Elementary School. At age four, she accidentally witnessed Doremi and her friends using magic, which led her to become the fourth witch apprentice to join the group. Her motivation for becoming an apprentice was largely tied to her admiration for her older sister, as she thought that whatever Doremi was doing looked interesting and fun.

In terms of personality, Poppu is mature and responsible for her age, a trait that earns her praise from both adults and her peers. She is charismatic, persuasive, and generally respectful and kind toward others, and she is quick to defend her friends and object to unkind behavior. This stands in contrast to her older sister, who is clumsy and unfocused. Poppu often teases Doremi and acts as though she expects her sister to fail, but beneath this teasing she genuinely loves Doremi's kindness and has followed after her since she was born. Despite her claims of maturity, she is still very much a child at heart. She struggles to stay up late and frequently falls asleep before her nighttime witch exams, and her restless sleeping habits occasionally cause trouble for those around her. She is, however, an early riser and capable of handling responsibilities such as minding the shop on her own.

Her role in the story is that of a supporting witch apprentice associated with the MAHO堂 group. She joins the other apprentices in performing magic, participating in magical stages, and taking part in the series of witch examinations. Because of her young age, she initially has difficulty taking the exams that are held at night, and during the first season she does not manage to take one at all. In the second season, however, her contribution to resolving a major incident involving Hana-chan results in her being advanced three class levels at once, bringing her to the sixth rank and earning her a new magical instrument. Over time, she continues to progress and eventually becomes the first among the younger apprentices to pass the first-class witch apprentice exam, briefly holding the red crystal ball that serves as a mark of a witch.

Her key relationships include her bond with Doremi, which is central to her character. Although the two sisters frequently bicker and Poppu enjoys provoking Doremi, their relationship is built on deep affection, and Poppu's decision to follow Doremi into the witch apprentice path reflects how much she looks up to her older sister. She also forms a close friendship with Onpu, as their personalities match well and they get along from their first meeting; Onpu is portrayed as one of the people who cares for Poppu the most after Doremi. Poppu is likewise regarded as a shared little sister by the other main characters, with Hazuki, Aiko, and Onpu each expressing fondness for her. Within her school life, she becomes a leader among the children from Sonatine Kindergarten when they are placed in classes with children from Primula Kindergarten, and she works to discourage the conflict between the two groups. She also has a long-running playful rivalry with a classmate named Kimitaka, who confesses to her just before moving away.

Her development is shown through her gradual growth from a kindergarten child into a more accomplished young girl. She starts playing the piano during her older kindergarten years after dreaming of it, and she pursues it seriously over the course of the series. In the later stories, she is in sixth grade and studying with the goal of entering Karen Girls Academy to become a pianist, a goal she eventually achieves. Her emotional development is especially visible in the final stretch of the original series, when Doremi decides not to become a witch; Poppu tearfully declares that she too will not become one, reaffirming that her path had always been tied to following her sister.

Her notable abilities include her magic, which she performs using the incantation associated with her red apprentice outfit and her trumpet-sounding polon, an instrument that she later combines into an upgraded form. She is also skilled at the piano despite the trumpet being her associated instrument, and she is capable of participating in the group's magical stage performances using her own special incantation. Her personal fighting move is known as the Poppucchi Special. She is accompanied by her own familiar, Fafa, and her signature style includes short light pink hair and reddish eyes that resemble Doremi's.
